VOICES & VIEWS Prepare for Release of the Next Generation of Engine Oils Mindy Long A new generation of heavy-duty engine oils designed to address the latest requirements for greenhouse gas emissions will be released in December. This release is more complex than earlier updates to API standards because it includes two categories - API CK-4, which is an update to the API CJ-4 standard, and API FA-4, a new category. Those within the industry said the new standards will require additional investments and create potential logistics issues, but despite the challenges, manufacturers are on track to meet the deadline. "The industry is prepared as engine manufacturers, oil companies and additive companies have been working together on this new category for more than four years," said Phil Ames, marketing manager, heavy-duty engine oil for Afton Chemical Corporation. Craig Paterson, general manager for North America Sales at The Lubrizol Corporation, said, "After significant time, testing and financial resources having been committed throughout the industry, all milestones needed to get to this point have been completed, including test development and design; funding; acceptance and running of the test matrix; specification approval; and engine oil technology demonstration." Jeffrey Leiter, ILMA's general counsel, said, "The additive manufacturers and others think the CK-4 will be more robust and offer better protection for existing trucks than the current category, CJ-4." Paterson said the new oils also offer the potential for additional fuel economy improvements, typically of 0.5 to 1 percent on a like-for-like viscosity grade basis, which can equate to significant savings for the fleet over the lifetime of every vehicle. To meet the new performance level, Ferrick said manufacturers are likely to use a higher level base oil. "They're likely to use Group II and Group III oils to meet this," he said. Steve Haffner, North America crankcase marketing manager for Infineum USA LP, said API CK-4 will provide significant improvements to heavy-duty engine oils, including improved oxidation protection and the ability to protect engines operating at much higher temperatures. "It will also improve aeration performance and shear stability protection for engine oils," he stated. Ames said that while FA-4 oils are intended for 2017 and newer on-road heavy-duty engines, their actual use, application and backwards compatibility will be determined by individual engine manufacturers. CK-4 is going to be backward compatible so it will work in older engines, but FA-4, which features lower high-temperature highshear requirements and is designed for improved fuel economy, will not. Benefits of the New Oils Kevin Ferrick, engine oil licensing and certification system manager for API, said the new categories, which were previously referred to as PC 11, are designed to address the latest EPA requirements for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. "One way to reduce those is to improve the efficiency of the engines. If you run a lower viscosity oil, you usually see increased fuel efficiency, which means you're emitting less GHG," he said.
