NOTES FROM MSCI The Importance of Advocacy: Spreading the Word that Metal Matters M. Robert Weidner III T he average American citizen may not have heard of a metals service center or the industrial metals supply chain, but the success of the metals industry is success for this nation in more ways than one. Americans rely on metal every day, from the time they open the refrigerator door for juice in the morning until they pull the car into the driveway after a long day of work. The dedicated professionals who make up the metals industry ensure the metal in our bridges, homes, vehicles and technology is safe and reliable. The metals manufacturing industry plays a critical role in the global economy, sustaining nearly 2.5 million U.S. jobs and contributing over $550 billion to U.S. gross domestic product. Our economic impact is greater than the film, aircraft manufacturing and software industries. As I'm sure it is at ILMA, at the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI), we've learned the importance of educating lawmakers and regulators about our industry and the necessity of explaining how certain mandates cripple our members' ability to grow the economy. On behalf of our more than 300 U.S. and Canadian member companies, we at MSCI educate and inform local and national lawmakers that "Metal Matters." Two key lessons have emerged from our efforts. First, educating lawmakers on the impact their actions, legislation and regulations have on all of our members is of the highest importance. For example, the global steel industry today is facing significant challenges resulting from the growing gap between global steelmaking capacity and global steel demand. China, in particular, substantially increased its domestic steel industry through various anti-competitive mechanisms such as state-sponsored subsidies. The U.S. metals industry has suffered from influxes of Chinese metals priced lower than the cost to produce them here. Our data has proved that service center shipments are a leading economic indicator. While steel shipments peaked in 2006, as of June 2016, shipments are still only 65 percent of that high. Earlier this year, MSCI argued on behalf of the industry before the United States Trade Representative (USTR), stating that while the U.S. government must respond to the challenges posed by global excess steel capacity, an appropriate response also considers the impact of U.S. trade policy Compoundings September 2016 * 13 * Vol. 66 No. 9
