final packaging. On top of that, there
is annual testing of samples to ensure
consistency and a detailed risk assessment of the production facility.
There are no laws in the U.S. that
require lubricant producers to register

registration program but adds a significant
step - annual monitoring program of
the production facility.

"Any large global food processor is
specifying that the food-grade lubricants they source have the ISO 21469
certification," said Breitner.

Just as there is more demand globally
for the type of certification and registration that NSF International provides,
there is also demand for H1 lubricants
that are certified halal and kosher.
Lubricant producers have the option of contacting their local rabbi to
obtain kosher certification. However,
some food and packaging manufacturers prefer kosher certification from an
internationally recognized body, such
as the International Kosher Council or
the KOF-K Kosher Supervision. These
two organizations specialize in food
manufacturing and processing.
For halal certification, producers
can go through organizations such as
the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America (IFANCA) and The
Halal Food Council. Both are U.S.based agencies, but their labels are
accepted around the world.
Sander emphasized the importance
of training the entire company on
maintaining the standards required for
kosher and halal certification. "That
includes the sales force, because they
are selling customers on the concepts
behind them," he said.
All of the similar yet different regulations that are being implemented
around the globe, options for third-party
certifications and religious certifications,
plus the drive toward better-performing
and even biodegradable products, can at
times seem overwhelming to lubricant
producers. Sander wants the industry to
keep things in perspective.
"While [lubricants] and all these
things we're talking about are very big
and important to us, they are a small
part of all the compliance things food
manufacturers have to deal with as
part of their processes," he said.
