also provide oil manufacturers with
a level playing field on which they
may compete.
API works with oil manufacturers,
base oil and additive suppliers, and
automakers and diesel engine manufacturers to set the standards. API then
licenses oils against those standards.
The standards themselves feature
engine and bench tests developed
in cooperation with or citing other
standards from organizations including ASTM and SAE. API-licensed
oils must pass these tests and meet the
cited standards.
Kevin Ferrick, senior manager,
Global Industry Services at API,
explained that eventually, either the
tests cited by an API standard become
obsolete or unavailable, or test labs
cease to run a specific test, perhaps be-

cause of a lack of demand for the test
itself. When either of these situations
results in a test cited by the standard
to become unavailable, API as the
licensing body must stop licensing oils
against those standards. That is where
the level playing field comes into play.
Any company that wants to license an
oil against an API standard has to have
a fair chance to qualify the oil through
testing. If a test is not available, a
disadvantage has been created.
Take the API SG standard, for example. The SG tests became unavailable years ago, so API had to eventually declare the standard obsolete. This
meant that oil manufacturers could
no longer license their SG oils and
place SG in the upper part of the API
Donut. It's important to note, however, that API's declaration that SG

had become obsolete didn't prevent
oil manufacturers from continuing to
make SG oils - they just couldn't refer to them as API-licensed or display
the API Donut.
This practice of manufacturing an
obsolete oil also posed a dilemma for
consumers: If no tests were available
to measure SG performance, how was
a consumer to know if the oil really
met the standard?
Obsolete oils in the market could
pose a risk to newer cars. Ferrick uses
ZDDP (zinc dialkyl dithiophosphate)
level in API SG as an example of the
potential risk; API SG had a maximum phosphorus level of 1200 ppm,
an amount suitable for the late '80s
and early '90s vehicles for which it
was recommended. However, this
level of phosphorus would not be
