Cyberattacks cost companies in the chemical
industry over $4 billion annually. The
annual costs incurred by businesses because
of cybercrimes have grown rapidly as dependence on the internet, software and other
technologies has increased. However, there
are steps companies can take to safeguard
their operation from an attack and minimize
the damages if an attack occurs.
This article should serve as a primer for companies setting
up or fine-tuning their cybersecurity policies. It will define
cybersecurity, delve into the types of cybercrimes and risks
businesses must be aware of, and discuss strategies companies can implement to reduce their risk of being affected
by a cybercrime.

CYBERSECURITY
Cybersecurity is the body of technologies, processes
and practices designed to protect networks, computers,
programs and data from attack, damage or unauthorized
access. In a computing context, the term "security" implies
cybersecurity. Furthermore, an effective cybersecurity
policy is one that is implemented and followed from the
executive level down.

TYPES OF CYBERCRIMES
There is an array of cybercrimes that can have a negative
impact on a business' operation. The term "cybercrime"
is rather broad and is usually defined as criminal activities
carried out by means of the computer or the internet.
There are four main methods that are used to commit
cybercrimes.
Viruses: Viruses are the most common method, and perhaps the most dangerous. Computer viruses are computer
programs that hide in other software programs. They attach
themselves to legitimate programs so that you don't know
they are there. Viruses can spread as they attach themselves
to other computer programs, which can make dealing with
them a difficult task. It is vital that preventive measures are
taken to limit your exposure to viruses; once a computer has
been infected, it can be very difficult to get it clean.
Several damaging viruses have been making their way
through businesses over the past few years, including Cryptolocker, Melissa, Oompa-A, My Doom, Slammer, Nimba,
Code Red and ILOVEYOU. Cryptolocker has spread
