The Advocate

I

am trying to figure out where the time has gone. I remember reading Frank Hamilton's presidential columns last year at this time and thinking "I'll be writing that
next year." Now, June is here and my year is more than half over. I've been excited
about this month's topic - advocacy - ever since my time at the University of
Delaware as a political science major.
What does advocacy mean to you? How much do you want to be involved? Are
you an advocate in your everyday life for your family, church, businesses, health?
We face challenges, and as leaders, we approach them in a way that can improve the
situation - we advocate for ourselves.
I am so impressed with ILMA's advocacy efforts and strong focus put forth over the
last few years. ILMA is our advocate, and members benefit from our advocacy efforts.
From the Regulatory Affairs meetings of years past to current efforts on the Hill by
Jeff, Daniel and myself, along with ILMA members, we are making our voices heard.
June is the start of summer, kids are out of school, beaches are full, the sun is
shining and vacations are planned. Do you know it is also a time when the Capitol
is still working and Congress is still in session? The Legislature is open, and it is a
beautiful time to visit Washington, D.C. The National Association of Manufacturers' (NAM) Manufacturing Summit (Fly-In) is June 20 -21. It is a bit later than
usual this year and will be a good time to become your own advocate.
We have a great delegation that will attend the Fly-In, and luckily, we have a yearround advocacy effort. We hope you will join us for the NAM Fly-In - it is never too
late. As you are reading this, there is likely still time. If you cannot come to Washington, please reach out to your congressmen and senators and invite them to your facility. Many of our members have done so and have cultivated great relationships with
their representatives. At the very least, invite them so they can see what an important
contribution you make to the district and to manufacturing in the United States.
We are our own best advocates because we know our industry. We're in a position
to educate everyone about the lubricant industry and its vital role in everything
from manufacturing to everyone's daily activities, like driving vehicles. Be your own
advocate. Let your politician know what we do, and give them your "I" story. When
we bring "the personal" into a situation it helps to connect. We have stories worth
telling. Some of us are third-generation businesses wanting to continue on and keep
our business in those politicians' districts. Talk to your local representatives about
how many of their constituents you employ, and why it matters to you, and therefore, to your representative. Make a connection.
Washington is a great place to visit. Yes, we are in a unique political climate, but
politics are still politics. Washington is not going anywhere, and we all want to continue to prosper and grow and manufacture in the U.S., so we do not want to avoid
D.C. We should embrace any chance to advocate for ourselves.
We are our own best advocates in life for our health, family and our business.
Please join us to advocate for the future of our industry. After all, our "I" story is
what we make it, and "I" plan to advocate for the industry. Instead of Mr. Smith
Goes to Washington, make it I Go to Washington. Let's storm the Hill and connect
with our representatives. I hope you can join us.
