Ask Congress to Recognize the
Contributions of Tribology

W

hat is a tribologist? Ask the average person that question, and you're
certain to get a blank stare. Unfortunately, even in the government,
there's little awareness of our industry, its contributions to innovation
and its economic impact.
The Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE) hopes to change
that. STLE seeks greater visibility from Congress with the introduction of H.R. 306,
a resolution in the House of Representatives that recognizes the economic impact
of tribology on the U.S. economy and encourages additional research and development, including public-private partnerships.
ILMA joins STLE in asking Congress for recognition of our industry. A congressional resolution is not a law, but it can be a means for a chamber of Congress to
express a collective opinion on public policy issues. While a resolution such as H.R.
306 has little legal weight, there's great value in raising the visibility of our industry
with lawmakers and the government.
In an age of innovation and ever-increasing awareness of energy efficiency, our
industry plays an important role in providing solutions. H.R. 306 serves to educate
the public that nearly one-third of energy consumption is attributed to friction.
And ILMA and STLE members are on the forefront of developing technologies to
reduce friction and energy losses. Through lubrication engineering, our industry has
developed ultra-low viscosity lubricants that help improve fuel economy of vehicles.
The industry has also developed products that improve the performance and useful
life of tools and machines in the manufacturing process.
According to STLE, tribology activities employ more than 300,000 people in the
U.S., contributing between $400 billion and $700 billion to our nation's economy.
Our industry turns the wheels of our economy, whether providing lubricants for cars
or other methods of transportation, including the trucks, trains and ships necessary
to bring products to market. Meanwhile, hydraulic fluids and industrial oils allow
machines and equipment used in building and manufacturing to operate safely with
reduced wear. Metalworking fluids allow metal to be cut and shaped for thousands
of products, including automobile parts, aircraft fasteners, wire and artificial joints.
H.R. 306 was introduced by U.S. Representatives Tim Ryan (D-Ohio), Dan
Lipinski (D-Ohio) and Michael Doyle (D-Pa.). In the next few weeks, ILMA will
be asking members to reach out to their representatives to ask them to co-sponsor
the resolution and to request that the measure be moved from the House Science
and Technology Committee to the floor where it can be voted on. We hope you'll
support this initiative by STLE to raise the visibility of our industry and to acknowledge its many contributions.
Other groups supporting this resolution include the American Society for
Mechanical Engineers, Auburn University, Carnegie Mellon University, Georgia
Institute of Technology, Pennsylvania State University and the University of Akron.
For more information about how you can help garner support for H.R. 306,
please visit the ILMA website, www.ilma.org.
