The Long Goodbye

he long goodbye becomes rather short when I realize that I only have one
letter left after this as ILMA president. The year is flying by. My mom always
said time goes faster the older you get, but now I think it doesn't matter how
old you are; time just goes fast. I think it's because we do so much, and our lives are
nonstop with technology, communication, work and family. The year has been one of
much change for me, but the steady support of the ILMA team has made the year
memorable and successful.
I cannot go through a year without thanking the people who help. We have a
really great ILMA team, and we have wonderful ILMA members. I think that's what
sets us apart as an association - we are comprised of members who care about their
businesses, just like our ILMA team cares about the association. We have a wealth of
knowledge about our industry that is unmatchable and that makes being president
rather easy. I want to thank the ILMA staff for being such a well-oiled team that
they keep everything running smoothly.
I was honored to be a part of the committee that was involved in the selection of
Holly Alfano as executive director, and now CEO, of the Association. The new focus
on advocacy matters and the desire to storm the Hill has been invaluable given several regulatory issues that the industry has had to face. Holly started out immediately
as an advocate and has continued to demonstrate her ability to lead the Association
in the right direction.
We are fortunate to have Martha Jolkovski to right the ship and ensure that everything is running smoothly. Her understanding and dedication are reflected in the
respect that she receives from all the members, which was priceless during the recent
transitional period.
Brenda Gillinson has been very busy with the amazing and continual improvements
she has been making. She has taken communications to a new level, and we will all
continue to benefit from those advancements, including in our social media presence.
Margaret Smith has an excellent understanding of the Association's finances,
which was good given my lack of love for numbers. The role of treasurer was made
much simpler in great part because of Margaret and all of her work. The scholarship
program is very involved, and Tim Mack has worked tirelessly to ensure the program's
success. His strengths have shone through as he has handled different aspects of the
Association, and we are lucky to have Tim on the ILMA team.
When Amber Lopez first joined ILMA I was hoping she would like it, and it has
been a great fit. Amber brings a fresh and positive outlook and has demonstrated her
ability to handle many different parts of the Association. The team also has been added to with Meg Thaxton, a needed addition to the membership application process.
ILMA's history is well known, as we are represented by the best advocate around
in Jeff Leiter. I am grateful to have known Jeff for many years, from the time of
the regulatory affairs meetings when my sister was president of ILMA, and I have
continued to learn from him. Daniel Bryant has joined now and is a great addition
as regulatory counsel. We are fortunate to have such a great legal duo.
The ILMA team is strong, and it has been an honor to work with all the members.
As I have transitioned through the board positions I have gotten to know the office
well, and it has been a positive and
