MANUFACTURERS SEE POTENTIAL IN AUGMENTED REALITY
Lockheed Martin, Boeing, BMW and Volkswagen are some of the manufacturers
experimenting with augmented reality (AR) in different areas of their business.
AR can put volumes of technical information in front of engineers or scientists
while they are building a model, troubleshooting a broken component or ensuring
the right blends are being used for a particular formula. AR can also speed up the
training process for new hires by acting as an assistant, checking their work and
giving instructions right before their eyes.
PACCAR LAUNCHES NEW TRANSMISSION
Paccar is the latest North American truck manufacturer to bring a proprietary
automated transmission to market, and that achievement completes its goal of
a fully integrated proprietary powertrain. The new transmission comes with a
750,000-mile oil change interval - the longest available for line-haul applications.
It also includes a differentiated fluid pressure detection system (with a fluid capacity
of 60 pints) that protects the gears and shafts from low fluid conditions.
STLE RELEASES LATEST EDITION OF MWF BOOK
Produced by the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers (STLE)
and edited by former STLE President Jerry P. Byers, the newest edition of
Metalworking Fluids has been released. The 21-chapter third edition covers the
latest developments in metalworking fluid technology, including metallurgy,
industrial application, waste treatment, government regulations, recycling
advances, cost analysis and more. The book is now for sale on Amazon in both
hardcover and Kindle formats.
NEW SLIPS COATING CAUSES MUSSELS TO LOSE THEIR FOOTING
Engineers at Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences
(SEAS) and the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard
University have developed Slippery Liquid-Infused Porous Surfaces (SLIPS) coatings, which promised to prevent nearly anything from adhering to structures to
which they were applied. It turns out that "nearly anything" includes mussels -
the most damaging of the biofouling organisms and the hardest to control. SLIPS
consists of a solid surface infused with a liquid lubricant overlayer that stays in
place so that anything that comes into contact with it will simply slide right off.
