THE 2017 ILMA ANNUAL
MEETING RECAP

LMA's 69th annual meeting, Shifting Gears -
Innovating the Future, was held at the beautiful
Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress in Orlando, Florida. The
attendance this year was another huge success, with a total of
1,060 members, prospective members and guests.

General Session
Keynote speaker Pat Williams, co-founder and senior vice
president of the NBA's Orlando Magic, delivered a presentation on "Inspirational Leadership" that included an overview
of seven qualities exceptional leaders possess. Attendees were
excited to be able to purchase several of Williams' books, which
he autographed for them after his address.

Base Camp - The Central Hub of ILMA!
Base Camp (sponsored by Petro-Canada Lubricants) continued to act as the central hub of our meeting this year, with
the fantastic registration desk and plenty of seating areas for
those important meetings and networking opportunities.
This year was also our second year utilizing the Headshot
Hub! Thanks to the excellent photographers and sponsor
Tulstar Products Inc., attendees who lined up for a headshot
have a brand new photo to upload to their ILMA website
profiles!

Numerous Networking Opportunities
ILMA's new president, Dave Croghan, mentioned in his
speech that "it's all about the networking." This year was no
exception, as there were endless networking opportunities,
including several receptions. The New Member/First Time
Attendee, Welcome and Opening receptions offered plenty
of opportunities to make new connections. And how could
we forget about the Breakfast of Champions highlighting
Sunday's sports tournaments? Do yourself a favor and check

This year's lunch session featured a town hall with moderator Greg Julian of Advanced Lubrication Specialties and
panelists Kevin Ferrick of the American Petroleum Institute
and Jeff Leiter, ILMA's longtime general counsel. The three
discussed the latest on API Category Development.

ILMA Industry Committee Meetings
This year's Metalworking Fluids Committee meeting was packed
with industry-relevant information. Topics covered included a
chlorinated paraffins update from Andrew Jaques of CPIA, as
well as an update on Union of the European Lubricants Industry
(UEIL) issues and activities from Stephan Baumgartel. John
Howell with GHS Resources also gave an update on boric
acid and metalworking fluid studies on autoworkers.
The SHERA Committee met to discuss the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), California's Prop. 65, Registration Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH)
and various other regulatory issues. The Innovative Business
Council had a great discussion about the mission of the
Council moving forward, and potential session topics for
ILMA's 2018 Management Forum in April. Topics discussed
included: recruiting and retaining employees from the next
generation; what is new in health care and how companies
are dealing with health insurance; and what the real story is
behind the push for electric vehicles.

Industry Sessions
This year's slate of industry sessions was most impressive
and touched on many relevant topics, including a panel
discussion on "Mobility Trends and Impacts on the Lubricants Industry." Notable takeaways included a glimpse into
the near future of self-driving trends, electric vs. fossil fuels,
Uber moving into the trucking business, and the "Amazon
Effect" taking place in the distribution sector.
Other industry sessions included "Trucking's 'New Normal' and Insights into Bulk Chemical Trucking;" "Globalization of the Engine Oil Market - Identifying Growth
Opportunities;" "Global Trade in the Americas; Developments, Opportunities and Hidden Risks;" and "Changing
Crude Dynamics: Refined Product Demand and Potential
Impacts of MARPOL VI."
Bill Taylor of Fast Company gave a keynote speech Tuesday
morning on "Global Trends in Innovation," focusing on the
process of "big change," and showing how companies can
manage transformation to meet the demands of a rapidly
changing world. He opened his presentation with a heartwarming story about his father-in-law, who was a sales rep for
ILMA member company Lubriplate after World War II.
