SEQUENCE VH
At the joint Auto/Oil Advisory Panel/
Passenger Car Engine Oil Classification Panel (AOAP/PCEOCP) meeting
in July, PCEOCP unanimously
accepted the Sequence VH test as suitable for measuring the sludge and varnish performance of an engine oil and
accepted that the test procedure can
be published as an American Society
of Testing and Materials (ASTM) test
method. In addition, AOAP agreed
that the test is suitable for inclusion in
ILSAC GF-6A and GF-6B. With these
agreements in place, the formulation
space surrounding this test can now
be established.

CHAIN WEAR
Progress has been made, but the impact of a move to the 2016 model-year
engine and pistons still needs to be addressed. A clearer picture will emerge
once the results of a six-test matrix are
reviewed and agreed upon by TF. 
LOW SPEED PRE-IGNITION
This test will be included in the
American Petroleum Institute (API)
SN Plus supplement. The first allowed
stand calibration date for the LSPI
stand/engine combinations was Aug.
15, 2017. This is significant in two ways.
First, the LSPI test now has an ASTMapproved, large batch of 2016 engines
matched with a sizable batch of pistons
and rings (BCs), which should last
well into the lives of the upcoming
API categories.

Second, it finally confirms that there
will be no ASTM calibrated stand/
engine combinations prior to this
date, so any candidate data collected
before Aug. 15 will not be eligible for
retroactive registration for product
data approvals.
The American Chemistry Council
(ACC) has outlined the steps necessary to include the test into the
Code of Practice. Work is underway
to prepare the oils to run the base oil
interchange/viscosity grade read across
(BOI/VGRA) matrix to establish BOI/
VGRA guidelines.

The Sequence IVB task force has
moved the test forward since the
ASTM meeting in late June, with
significant changes to the test

Chrysler Seq. IIIH

Oxidation & Deposits

Available for candidate testing at the time being. Industry
concern over mild viscosity increase with batch 5 pistons. A
new batch of pistons (batch 5) is being manufactured. Likely
delay of BOI/VGRA matrices.

Toyota Seq. IVB

Wear

Delayed. Issues with a large number of single lobe failures for
"candidates." TF has made several changes to improve the
test, and estimated time for proceeding to precision matrix is
December 2017/January 2018.

Ford Seq. VH

Sludge & Varnish

Test approved as an ASTM standard. Will likely be retroactively
registered from May 4, 2017.

GM Seq. VIE/VIF

Fuel Economy

Switch to GM short block engines analyzed by statisticians and
accepted by Surv. Panel. VIE and VIF limits for ILSAC GF-5 are
under development and need to be approved.

Seq. VIII

Corrosion

Available for candidate testing.

Ford LSPI

Pre-ignition

Test accepted and new hardware needs to be approved.
Available for candidate testing. Retroactive registration agreed
by ACC from Aug. 15, 2017.

Ford Chain Wear

Wear

Delayed. Additional testing underway with new hardware.
