learned to much better appreciate the operations side of the
business. Today, he spends his days working with his managers on driving key business initiatives, including strategic
supply, sales and marketing operations, and working with
customers to ensure contract obligations are met.
Maxum is a major contract manufacturer with a heavy
focus on marine lubricants and a wide range of commercial
and industrial products. "The complexity of the product mix
is changing. That is industrywide," Croghan said, adding
that the company is looking for ways to diversify and grow
into different categories. "As engines become more efficient,
that changes things for us."
Maxum Petroleum has undergone over 20 different
acquisitions, mergers and divestitures in the past eight years
in an effort to consolidate a fragmented industry. "We've
done a good job retaining our great talent and keeping the
heritage cultures as best as we can," Croghan said. "We've
given autonomy to the teams in place to have them run the
businesses," he said. "I like the opportunity to put together
teams with structure that want to succeed together as a
network and not necessarily a hierarchy."
Today, Maxum is privately owned and operates as Pilot
Thomas Logistics outside of the marine and blending businesses. It has strong financial support and involvement from

its key shareholders and a heavy focus on its customers. "On
the blending side of the business, we have about 10 primary
customers and focus on companies we don't compete with,"
Croghan said.
The company has more than 40 distribution facilities
and over 1,700 team members but in many facets still
operates like a family-run business, with a strong emphasis on its customers and getting the job done. At its West
Coast headquarters in Rancho Dominguez, California, the
office holds quarterly barbecues and encourages employee
participation in several annual events, including a Halloween competition in which employees decorate their
departments to win a team lunch. "Morale is key for us to
be successful," Croghan said.
Croghan said the people within the lubricants industry are
what make his work so enjoyable. He enjoys the camaraderie
ILMA members share and the longevity of the friendships he
has made. "People don't leave this business," he said, adding
that he has become friends with many of the second-, thirdor fourth-generation families running their businesses.
Croghan has held several positions on the Association's
board over the past eight years, including serving on
the Executive Committee as secretary, treasurer and vice
president. He is looking forward to his tenure as president.
