accurate and is changing the way blending plants are
managed. Plant operations personnel are able to predict
future problems in production or maintenance and able
to take proactive steps to prevent a shutdown or even
temporary stoppage. With machine-data technology and
remote monitoring systems, when a machine or specific
component functions below standard, information will be
sent to a monitoring system, providing insights for maintenance by predicting failures and efficiency by maximizing
machine performance.
Other lubricant blenders' investments in IT development
are also changing the way the industry operates and its relationship with its customers.
U.K.-based Castrol launched Castrol InnoVentures to
invest in IT solutions. In 2014, it set up a 50-50 joint
venture with TechSolve Inc., a Cincinnati, Ohio-based
manufacturing consultancy. The joint venture, Optis, offers
machining efficiency and procurement solutions to manufacturers including Boeing in the aerospace industry and
Toyota and Honda in the automotive industry.
Chevron has invested in startups including Manna and
Mobilize to develop smart data analytics systems, and its
NSS Labs specializes in internet security solutions. Saudi
Aramco and Shell are also investors in Manna, based in Palo
Alto, California.
Meanwhile, Shell Marine's new initiative for the marine
lubricant industry is another example of changes in customer relations. Its Marine Integrated Lubricant and Expert
Solutions, or MILES, introduced in April 2017, makes use of
IT solutions developed by the company's startup in London.
This proprietary solution provides ship owners with predictive
data for lubricant demand and supply planning, purchasing
options and other nonlubricant needs of vessel management.
Using big data analytics and AI or machine learning for its
MILES solution, Shell Lubricants aims to transform itself
from a lubricant supplier to a lubricant service provider.
AI will be everywhere. "The cognitive/AI software platforms market experienced excellent growth in 2016, with
revenue of $1.6 billion and a growth rate of 56.5 percent,"
said David Schubmehl, research director, Cognitive/Artificial Intelligence Systems, at IDC.
"Organizations are using cognitive/AI software platforms
to develop intelligent applications that provide answers, predictions, recommendations and prescriptive advice to both
customers and employees," he added.
