Severity issues need resolution. Matrix will be
on hold until the group can decide the proper
course of action. However, blending of select oils
for preliminary testing is underway.

BOI VGRA matrix testing underway. Analysis in
late Feb, 18

"With ILSAC GF-6 containing new performance parameters such as chain wear
elongation, LSPI events and replacement tests that behave somewhat differently
than their predecessors, the future formulations could be challenging."
and introduced. The Base Oil Interchange (BOI) Viscosity Grade Read Across (VGRA) task force is considering
a recommendation for interim guidelines based upon the
legacy Sequence III tests and a verification of these technical
principles with two matrix oil runs utilizing the Batch 5
pistons. There is no consensus on the best route forward for
running the BOI/VGRA matrix, so it is on hold until the
work of the lab severity task force is concluded.
Progress was made on establishing Sequence IIIF to IIIH
equivalency limits. Statisticians' conclusions were reviewed
with the Category Life Oversight Group (CLOG). CLOG
recommendations were passed to the Heavy-Duty Engine Oil
Classification Panel (HDEOCP) at the December meeting for
consideration for the API Cx specifications. CLOG is preparing
a data package for API LG to review concerning the equivalency for API SL. There is concern with the technical merit of
statistical equivalence of the WPD (weighted piston deposits)
measurements. Three options were discussed for API LG to
consider: 1) live with current statistical interpretations to decide
limits; 2) decide there is no equivalence and make API SL
obsolete for lack of test; or 3) develop a 70-hour version of the
current Sequence IIIH test for use in specs with Sequence IIIF.
API LG will need to decide the best path forward.

Sequence IVB
The second precision matrix was completed in January
2018, and analysis work was underway to be able to share
results with AOAP/Passenger Car Engine Oil Classification
Panel (PCEOCP) in early February.

Sequence X
In December, the chain wear test was approved by the
PCEOCP as a new American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard and approved by AOAP as a test in
the ILSAC GF-6 specification. Draft limits were proposed
by ILSAC and will be reviewed at the February AOAP meeting. The test is expected to be ready to start the BOI/VGRA
matrices early next year.

Sequence VH
As requested, the Surveillance Panel supplied data to CLOG
on VH to VG equivalency which included four statistical
interpretations and an interpretation from the test sponsor.
As there was no one clear method that could be agreed upon
to establish equivalency, and because Sequence VG is still
available, the group agreed to focus on the Sequence IIIF to
IIIH equivalency (equally complicated but with the danger
of Sequence IIIF becoming unavailable in the first quarter of
