growing demand for liquefied natural
gas has helped prices to climb, but
reminded, "I think it will take some
time to see if the natural gas prices
increase enough to make coal an
attractive option again."
Larry Young, Whitmore Field Services general manager at Whitmore,
also mentioned the link to natural gas.
His company offers products to the
mining industry to help protect "the
world's most expensive mobile equipment." Young said his company is "not
only seeing an increase in production
from domestic coal use, but also in
exports to Asia."
He indicated that "prior to the [U.S.
presidential] election, there were massive
industrywide layoffs and production
decreases due mainly to regulations and
a switch to natural gas from the power

generation industry." Now, that is starting to change. Jack Ellis, senior director
of sales at Whitmore, added: "We are
seeing a substantial increase in production from the mining industry, especially
with coal in the Western United States."
Despite mixed coal projections, there
is opportunity for lubricant manufacturers. In an article from
Nov. 29, 2017, research firm MarketsandMarkets stated that "growth of
the mining industry, increase in the
demand for coal in electricity generating applications, and the increasing
demand for base metals such as copper,
nickel, lead, zinc and others are fueling
the demand for mining lubricants."
Additionally, MarketsandMarkets has coal mining "projected
to be the fastest-growing segment
from 2017 to 2022, due to the high

consumption of heavy load equipment
in the coal mining industry."

Are Policy Changes
Making a Difference?
After Trump entered the White House
in January 2017, he started implementing policy to change existing
regulations. Since early 2017, the
White House has voided the Stream
Protection Act and Resource Management Planning (2.0) Rule and used
executive orders to direct the Environmental Protection Agency to rescind
and rewrite the Clean Power Plan
and rework the Waters of the U.S.
Rule, according to a review of recent
changes compiled by advisory firm
Willis Towers Watson. In addition
