In the Know
DO WE HAVE MORE TO LOSE THAN JOBS VIA AUTOMATION?
Researchers at Villanova and Ball State universities found that a 10 percent
increase in automated job-loss risk in a county increased the average county
ranking of poor health by as much as 1 percent. Those researchers estimated that
the impact of automation-related job-loss risk in a typical county would range
from $37 million to over $250 million in losses related to poorer health outcomes.
However, they are not drawing the conclusion that automation should be stopped.
Instead, the researchers recommend better fundamental education at the K-12
level, where the skills that allow workers to retrain are first taught, and more
comprehensive skill training for displaced workers.

EXXONMOBIL AIMS TO ENHANCE VESSEL ENGINE OPERATION
ExxonMobil's new Mobil ServSM Cylinder Condition Monitoring, launching
in July, will allow vessel operators to measure fuel sulfur content and carry out
real-time analysis of engine performance and lubricant consumption. According to
the company's global field engineering manager, Iain White, the next-generation
scrape-down oil analysis service will, more specifically, be able to identify issues
such as over- or under-lubrication, cold corrosion and the presence of catalytic
fines. Operators will also receive recommendations on feed rate and cylinder oil
to optimize lubricant consumption, allowing for quicker action and, ultimately,
cost-savings.
LUBEMON GOES WIRELESS
Assalub recently announced its user-friendly wireless monitor WLubeMon (Wireless
LubeMon), which monitors all types of automatic lubrication systems and manual
grease lubrication. The meter (LubeMon) has been available for years, but it required
cable transmission. The disadvantages of the older technology were the high cost
of cable installation and a risk of cable damage. With a battery that lasts 15 years,
WLubeMon measures the amount of lubricant fed into a lubrication point and
transmits that data wirelessly to a control unit. The system provides an alarm both
for volumes that are too high or too low as well as statistics and log functions.
BIG DATA AIDS MACHINE LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE
Elite Lubrication Specialties (ELS) offers intelligent asset management systems
such as predictive analytics and oil analysis to help prolong the life of customers'
machines. By applying sensors and the industrial internet of things, ELS can
ascertain when the lubricants should be cleaned or changed instead of relying on
a predetermined maintenance schedule. Companies deploying the technology can
keep their machines running longer with less downtime for maintenance. ELS
says that while this probably results in lower lubricant usage and, ultimately, lower
sales, the reward is a satisfied customer.
