SAFETY IS ON THE TABLE AT PILOT
CHEMICAL CO.
When it comes to creating a culture
of safety, Pilot Chemical Co. in
Cincinnati, Ohio, is all in. At the
start of every internal meeting with
at least four people, a Pilot employee
reads a safety message from a deck of
customized playing cards. It reinforces
the company's commitment to safety
and, ultimately, reduces the number of
workplace incidents.

Pilot's custom safety playing cards.

"It's a creative way to be mindful
that safety is everyone's priority," said
Jason Denlinger, corporate environmental, health and safety manager for
Pilot Chemical. "Before we introduced
the cards, safety moments were not
always being shared at meetings. Now
it's just a part of our routine; someone
even shuffles and cuts the deck before
we get started."
Fifty-two unique safety messages are
printed on the Pilot-branded playing
cards to serve as important reminders,
including:
"All security incidents, no matter
how minor, should be reported
immediately."
"Never use unprotected wireless networks while traveling, in restaurants,
airports or hotels."
"Pilot has a corporate security
committee (CSC) which is designed to

enhance understanding and oversight of
the systems that need to be put in place
to manage and mitigate risk related to
both cyber and physical security."
Pilot Chemical created the
cards in 2016 after receiving its
certification under the American
Chemistry Council's (ACC) Responsible Care® program. The cards
were relaunched in 2018 to educate
employees about cybersecurity
initiatives and the ISO 9001:2015
certification. According to the ACC,
Responsible Care companies have an
employee safety record five times better than the U.S. manufacturing sector
and almost three times better than the
chemistry industry overall.
In addition to Pilot's strides in
employee safety, Christina May has
been named Pilot Chemical Co.'s new
business line manager. She will oversee
the direction and performance of Pilot
Chemical's product line.

Christina May

May brings more than 15 years
of experience in product sales and
chemistry and most recently served
as market development manager at
Michelman in Cincinnati, Ohio. She
earned a bachelor's degree in chemical
engineering from the University of
