North America remains a region that is dominated by
step transmissions. New higher-speed planetary automatic
transmissions are under development and commercialization.
Figure 2 profiles the continuing changes within the North
American step transmission market, with historical four-step
and five-step transmissions giving way to more complex
and sophisticated systems with higher speeds and associated
computer control. This essentially places the transmission
into a state of continual change, where it adjusts conditions
to optimize driveability while capturing fuel economy credits.
This includes major efforts by companies including Ford and
General Motors (GM), who, in 2013, entered into a 10-year
joint development program for new nine- and 10-speed transmissions for use in their cars, crossovers, pickups and SUVs.
The overall success of the Ford-GM joint venture has yet
to be determined. Nevertheless, it illustrates the need for car
manufacturers to work together to design the necessary

equipment for the future while delivering key features, such as
fuel economy. The interesting observation from Figure 2 is that
the "average" transmission gearing for new units has shifted
from 4.5 in 2006 to 6.5 in 2016 and is expected to move to
8.7 by 2024, with the major transmission type increasing from
four-step (A4, 2006) to six-step (A6, 2016) and eventually a
range of eight-step to 10-step (A8-A10, 2024) systems.
Asian car manufacturers, such as Honda, Toyota, Nissan
and Mitsubishi, have focused their attention to continuously variable transmissions (CVTs) for many of their
smaller vehicle power plants. This technology has been used
commercially using belt and chain offerings. The technology
is also called single-speed or a stepless transmission, where it
changes gears seamlessly through a continuous range of gear
ratios. CVT technology has continued to improve over the
years such that it is now a standard feature with many Asian
automobiles with smaller powerplants.
