Cybersecurity Should be a
Top Business Priority

t seems that almost every week, we learn about a cyberattack or data
breach of a large company. Late last year, Marriott International
announced a data security incident compromising private information
of up to 500 million people. It would be a mistake for ILMA members
to assume that because they aren't a large corporation, such as Marriott,
Equifax or Target, that they're not vulnerable. Criminals and bad actors
don't discriminate.
As security expert Rob May said in a TEDx talk: "There are two types of
organizations - those who have suffered a cyberattack and those who don't
know they have."
According to a recent report by the Center for Strategic and International
Studies, worldwide cybercrime costs an estimated $600 billion a year.
That's an increase from $500 billion in 2014. The new estimate amounts to
0.8 percent of global gross domestic product, up from 0.7 percent in 2014.
Hackers have multiple ways of stealing not only data, but also money
from you. Spoofing emails, sending phony invoices or making requests
under the CEO's name for private employee information are just a few
examples of some of the latest scams. This could be going on today in your
company without your knowledge. Have you discussed this issue with your
employees? Experts say some 90 percent of the time that a system is hacked
is not because of a system flaw, but because of human error such as clicking
on a link in a phishing email.
Because the issue hasn't really been on ILMA's radar, we are stepping up
our education on cybersecurity this year. Make sure to attend our session,
Real-World Cybersecurity for Lubricant Manufacturers, at the ILMA Engage
meeting, April 11-13 in Coronado, California. Featured speaker Bryce
Austin, known as a cybersecurity performance accelerator, will cover realworld cybersecurity issues for businesses of all sizes so you can learn what's
at risk and how you can protect your company against all manners of scams
and cyberattacks.
In addition, ILMA is developing a video for you to train employees to
spot potential scams that come through email, as well as other security
issues. As we move more and more into the digital world, it's critical that we
take the steps now to ensure our systems are secure.
