When the U.S. Army created the Ordnance Lubrication Program during World War II in
1941, standard lubricants did not exist for military vehicles and equipment. At the time,
the Army used two different engine oils, two different gear lubricants and three types of
grease, resulting in 22 different grades of lubricant for automotive equipment alone -
not including those intended for special purposes. The Ordnance Lubrication Program
found these commercial products to be inadequate for meeting the Army's operational
needs in the war. So, the Ordinance Corps and lubricants industry began cooperating to
develop bench tests, engine dynamometer tests and rating procedures, which shaped
much of the uniformly defined fuels and lubricants performance requirements held by
the U.S. military today.
