Getting Up to Speed
on Electric Vehicles

ass media outlets and assorted pundits continue to
rev up the case for a worldwide electric vehicle (EV)
revolution. Predictions vary, but one forecast expects
that 95 percent of all vehicles on U.S. roads will be electric
by 2042. That would be huge, when you consider that of the
more than 1 billion registered vehicles on the road today, only
2 million are electric - with 1 million of those in China.
Even if there is a more modest transition, any movement
away from the internal combustion engine (ICE) to electric
figures to be a disruptor for people and companies involved
in the tribology and lubricants business sector - which is
why the Society of Tribologists and Lubrication Engineers
(STLE) has been reaching out to experts for some informed
opinions on the commercial and technical impact of the EV
trend. STLE is learning that there are numerous questions
and issues to consider as it moves forward.
For example, what is an electric vehicle? "EV" tends to
be a general term for a range of vehicles. STLE's approach
has been to define an EV as a vehicle in which all systems
are electrical. Vehicles equipped with a driveline containing
both battery and ICE power are designated as hybrids.
It's also worth considering whether consumers will accept
the new product. The benefits of electrification are many,
including reduced emissions and maintenance and improved
performance. But consumer research has pinpointed concerns
about vehicle cost, limited driving range and battery-charging
issues. On the latter issue, people note that it takes minutes to
fill a gas tank but hours to charge a battery.
Another concern is about the technical issues; what sort will
need to be confronted? Here is where the list of unknowns gets
even longer. Currently, the focus is on thermal transfer, electric
and magnetic fields, seals and materials compatibility. The issue
of lubricant compatibility with, for example, copper wire and
various types of seals, is one of the most discussed topics.
While STLE doesn't have all the answers, it is the place
to plug into some expert opinions about possible scenarios
when it comes to EVs and the lubricants business. One
excellent place to start is the January 2019 TLT magazine
cover story, titled "Tribology of Electric Vehicles." This is a
