Stop. Continue. Start.

O

ccasionally I hear a speech that sticks with me. That was the case at
ILMA Engage, our meeting last month at Hotel Del Coronado in
California.
At our "ILMA Talks" keynote, speaker Scott Stratten entertained our
attendees with a presentation that was similar to a comedy routine. He
shared a story about a consulting experience with a company that was
having difficulty with employee retention. That story ended up providing a
takeaway point that resonated with me as an effective tool that can apply to
many situations.
The story goes like this: A company hired Scott as a consultant to probe
why management was finding it difficult to retain employees. In a session
with employees, Scott assigned them a very simple task. He gave them each
a sheet of paper and asked employees to make three lists: 1) stop; 2) continue; and 3) start. 1) What should the company management stop doing?
2) What should the company management continue doing? And 3) what
should management start doing? With promises of anonymity, the employees quickly started writing. Of course, the "stop" list was considerably large.
Scott compiled the lists and presented them to management. Unfortunately, the story did not have a happy ending. The company's management
did not really want to change any of the practices that were alienating employees and showed no interest in the employees' lists. Sometimes companies hire
consultants to fix problems that really can't be fixed by an outsider.
Stop. Continue. Start.
It's a very simple exercise that can be applied to a lot of things. It can
be an effective self-assessment tool in evaluating performance. It could be
utilized in developing and gauging marketing strategies. It could be used
during employee performance reviews as a goal-setting exercise. I can think
of many applications for these three simple words, and I'm sure you can, too.
But there's one catch. In order for the exercise to work, you must be
open to the results. In other words, you must take it seriously and be
willing to make changes based on what's on the three lists. That's where the
real work begins.
Thanks to all who attended ILMA Engage. I hope you made some time
to attend the sessions and took home some information that was useful and
relevant. Planning is now underway for our Annual Meeting, Sept. 21-24,
at The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colorado. See you there!
