LOW OIL PRESSURE BLAMED IN CRUISE SHIP ENGINE FAILURE
The Norwegian Maritime Authority (NMA) has determined that an engine
failure on the Viking Sky cruise ship this past March was directly caused by low
oil pressure. While the level of lubrication oil was within set limits, heavy seas
caused movement in the tanks so extreme that the supply to lubricating oil pumps
stopped. That stoppage triggered an alarm, which caused an automatic shutdown
of the engines. The NMA has since drawn up a general safety notice about ensuring a continuous supply of lubricating oil to engines and other critical systems in
poor weather conditions.
FEDEX UNVEILS AUTONOMOUS ROBOT FOR HYPER-LOCAL DELIVERY
FedEx plans to test out its new autonomous robot, SameDay Bot, in select
markets this summer. The robot is a collaboration between FedEx and DEKA
Development & Research Corp. According to FedEx, retailers will be able to
accept orders from nearby customers and deliver them by bot directly to customers' homes or businesses the same day. FedEx is collaborating with companies such
as AutoZone, Lowe's, Pizza Hut, Target, Walgreens and Walmart to assess retailers'
autonomous hyper-local delivery needs.
NEW ROBOTIC HEMMING PROCESS STARTED FOR LIGHTWEIGHT AND
ELECTRIC VEHICLE MANUFACTURING
Comau, a global manufacturer of industrial automation products and systems,
has recently launched a robotic roller hemming process, Smart Hemmer. Smart
Hemmer is a compact, symmetrical roller hemmer that allows automakers to join
dissimilar materials while maintaining a constant hemming thickness using a cold
process. The Smart Hemmer can perform curved path hemming and manage
complex angles as part of a single, continuous process. Smart Hemmer was developed in partnership with an unnamed automotive manufacturer.
VALVOLINE BUILDING LOYALTY THROUGH CAREER ASSISTANCE
Valvoline recently announced the launch of its Auto Career Accelerator (ACA), an
online recruiting platform that connects emerging professionals to open positions
in both the automotive services and heavy-duty industries. Available jobs will be
posted exclusively from within Valvoline's Lubricant Customer network, which
includes tire shops, car dealerships, quick-lube centers, heavy-duty fleets and other
heavy-duty positions nationwide.
