crankcase oils with at least 25%
biobased content have been afforded
federal procurement preference by the
USDA for all agencies and government contractors since 2013.
As I mentioned above, the USDA
added products that are designed to
care for firearms by cleaning, lubricating, protecting or any combination
thereof. The USDA gave examples of
"firearm lubricants," such as products
that are designed for use in firearms to
reduce the friction and wear between
the moving parts of a firearm, to keep
the weapon clean and/or to prevent the
formation of deposits that could cause
the weapon to jam. The USDA requires
that, for purposes of preferred procurement, the firearm lubricant must have

a minimum biobased content of at least
32%, which is based on the amount
of qualifying biobased carbon in the
product as a percent of the total organic
carbon in the finished product.
The USDA believes the bioeconomy
is a catalyst for economic development, especially in rural America,
creating new jobs and new markets for
farmers and ranchers. The department
also claims that investing in biobased
businesses provides benefits other
than procurement preference. While
enforcement of the USDA's biobased
program has been lax, one should
expect some pickup in activity as the
Trump administration seeks to help
farmers affected by the imposition of
tariffs on Chinese imports.

It is safe to say that biobased
lubricants are not going away. With
the federal government's initiative,
coupled with lobbying by growers
associations and advances in lubricant
biotechnology, the U.S. lubricants
market, including for industrial lubricants and greases, will see more and
more biobased products, particularly
in applications with environmental or
health safety concerns.
