my controller," Perkins said. "This
26-year-old kid is basically running
everything. It's a great success story."
From a true internship standpoint,
Perkins recently hired a young man
who is a student at the University of
Colorado studying chemical engineering, and he's working for PennStar
Lubricants under the lab team that
does testing for formulas.
"He came in laser-focused, and he
has found a niche with us," Perkins
said. "Another young man graduated
from Purdue in December with an
engineering degree, and he is learning
everything at our company. He's
learned how to blend oil, run the
warehouse and is now running 100%
of our inventory and procurement
management. He has become an integral part of our business really quickly."
And at a time when the trade shows
are full of many of the same veterans
who have walked the floor for decades,
apprenticeship-type programs that
bring new blood into the lubricants
industry is vital.
"They bring fresh ideas and energy," Perkins said. "What I would like to get to on
a more permanent basis is to do a career
day at different universities - especially
the prestigious engineering universities
here in the Lehigh Valley. I look forward to
pulling more talent out in that manner."
Finding Applicants
While Apprenticeship.gov is slowly
helping companies discover people
interested in a career, many unofficial
apprenticeship programs are finding
applicants when companies go to
high schools and talk to students
about working for the company once
they graduate (in conjunction with
pursuing higher education).
"Companies are going to be their
own best recruiters," Carrick said. "If
you're going to outsource recruiting to
a college, they have a responsibility to
recruit across every one of their programs, and there's a lot of competition.
In my opinion, a company is the best
salesman for their jobs and careers."
