fluids are typically highly multifunctional and serve as
dispersants, emulsifiers, corrosion inhibitors, wetting agents
and EP additives," Thomas said.
Steve Florio, chief technical officer for Master Fluid
Solutions, said phosphorus is a multifunctional material that
provides a lot of great functional performance relative to
cost. "It comes in many, many different forms. It is widely
available on a global basis," he said, adding that there aren't
a lot of alternatives the lubricants industry can turn to for
additives that provide lubricity at extreme pressures.
Fanning said phosphorus has several functions and is
difficult to replace in industrial lube oils, hydraulic oils
and gear oils. "There isn't any chemistry out there now that
provides anti-wear without some type of phosphorus," he
said, adding that the amount of phosphorus used is minor
but necessary to get the qualities manufacturers need.
What's more, the industry has been trying to move away
from chlorinated paraffins. "The types of materials you'd go
to are sulfur and phosphorus," Fanning explained.
Removing phosphorus results in a sacrifice in performance. For those companies that have requested zero
phosphorus, DuBois Chemicals has created a special product. "The problem is the product can't take the pressures
so they don't perform as well," Fanning said, adding that
pumps, for example, can wear out faster.
Going Forward
Burke said industry must continue to educate the public as well
as key decision-makers and must show the difference between
DRP and nonreactive phosphorus, such as that found in additives in motor oil and some metal-removal fluids.
"Banning all forms of phosphorus can unnecessarily
burden industry such as metal-finishing operations," he
said, adding that advocacy should continue for the industry
as well as the measures that will be the most effective at
limiting algae blooms in the Great Lakes.
