ILMA's committees met in Colorado Springs to discuss
the latest regulatory issues. During the Metalworking Fluids
Committee meeting, attendees discussed the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and animal chemical toxicity
test. The committee determined that ILMA should comment on the Environmental Protection Agency's priority
lists that have been published in the Federal Register, which
identify chemicals that will have further risk evaluation done
to determine regulations and standards.
John Howell, an ILMA consultant, told attendees at the
Safety, Health, Environmental & Regulatory Affairs Committee meeting that there is a new effort under way to write
a new specification for tractor hydraulic fluids, and ASTM's
D02, Subcommittee N has started to write the new standard.
Howell also urged attendees to make sure everything they
use is on the TSCA active/inactive inventory list, which
was published in February. Violations can result in fines of
$25,000 per day per incident.
Educational sessions covered a variety of topics, including
motorcycle, automotive and truck trends, 3D printing and
the global market. Industry leaders came together during

ILMA's International Forum to discuss how to increase
success when doing business in new countries. Panelists told
attendees it is important to understand the market demands,
regulatory requirements and equipment manufacturers' specifications when selecting new markets. They also recommended
companies work with local players, distributors and U.S.
embassies to help navigate the complexity of a new market.
Capt. Scott Kelly, a history-making astronaut and retired
U.S. Navy captain, offered an inspirational keynote address,
sharing information about overcoming obstacles to become
an astronaut and spending the year in space. "Be willing to
take risks, make mistakes and fail," he said.

With the 2020 presidential election on the horizon,
politics is top of mind for many ILMA members. Amy
Walter, a political analyst and national editor of The Cook
Political Report, spoke during the meeting and said the
strong economy, independent voters and the positions of the
final Democratic nominee will all play a part in the battle
for the presidency.
In addition to structured learning opportunities presented
throughout the event, ILMA made time for fun. Attendees
took part in various sporting events, including croquet and
skeet shooting, networking receptions and meals, which
provided countless opportunities for connecting with others
in the industry.
The meeting closed with a reception and the ILMA President's Dinner. ILMA members thanked Barbara Kudis, ILMA's
2019 Board president, and welcomed Chuck Decker, who will
serve as the Association's president throughout 2020.
