any people outside of this
industry understand the
importance lubricants play in
their vehicles, but the significant roles
lubricants play go far beyond that. They
also are crucial to the machines that
produce clothing, the assembly lines
that manufacture breakfast cereal, and
even the power grid. Although lubricants are critical to today's way of life,
the work they do often goes unnoticed.
"Every single thing you touch in a
day was created using a lubricant or
has a lubricant in it right now allowing
it to be used," said Justin Collett,
director of business development for
PLZ Aeroscience Corp.
If lubricants suddenly didn't exist,
the world would be very different, said
Michael Mayhew, marketing specialist
at Afton Chemical Corp. Modern-day
global trade networks would break
down, and the country would have to
revert to horsepower for transportation.
"Petroleum lubricants, and by
extension petroleum additives, reach
through every aspect of the global economy," Mayhew said. "From keeping
our transportation industry moving to
the operation of nearly every type of
machine we buy, modern-day technology relies on lubricants for mobility,
protection and efficiency."

However, without gear oils, the
power grid would not be possible.
"No matter what source of power
you're looking at, whether that be coal
or wind, you have gearboxes that are
driving those pieces of equipment and
those generators," Washington said.
As the country uses more renewable
energy, such as wind energy, gear oil
becomes even more necessary. "When
you look at that wind turbine turning
and those big blades going around,
you don't think about the gearbox and
the bearings," Washington said. "There
is a high load on those bearings that
require premium grease."
He added that because there is
going to be a higher demand for
power, there is an increasing need to
have the source be renewable. "Without the proper lubrication, it is not
possible," Washington said, adding
that producing sustainable and clean
energy is dependent on whether the
chemical industry, including Lubrizol,
can create the needed lubricants.
"Without us doing what we do, we
can't hit the environmental regulations
we need to hit."

MANUFACTURING

ELECTRICITY
Power is crucial not only to the U.S.
economy, but also to the world's
economy. That is particularly true
as the emerging middle class grows
globally and more people have lights
and refrigerators in their homes, said
Michael Washington, global business
manager, industrial products, Lubrizol.

Manufacturing requires a range
of machines. Gear and hydraulic
lubricants and additives are commonly
used in the manufacturing industry
for the operation of pumps, assembly
lines, forklifts, mixer/blenders, tractors
and nearly every type of machine that
moves to make production easier and
more efficient, Mayhew said. "Manufacturing on the global scale that we
see today would not be possible without petroleum lubricants," he added.

Collett said that any process that
uses a mold to create a product, such
as plates, dinner wear, shoes and
toothbrushes, requires a lubricant so
the mold will release the product.
Lubricants are used in machines to
prevent wear and corrosion, transfer
heat and, in turn, provide overall
efficiency. "In the same way it's easier
to collect speed on a Slip 'N Slide
with soap and water than without,
machines require less power and are
more efficient when they are properly
lubricated," Mayhew said. "With
increased fuel economy regulations
and the drive to reduce our global
carbon footprint, the role of lubricants
has never been more important."
People know their automobiles
require a lubricant to run, but they
don't always realize it takes lubricants
to get motor oil from the manufacturer
to the store shelf. Following a quart of
oil from start to finish can highlight the
manufacturing process. "It takes a lot of
lubricants to produce a quart of lubricant," said Frank Hamilton, president
of South Atlantic Services Inc. "People
do not think about that."
Production begins with the bottle
itself, which starts out as pellets of
high-density polyethylene resin that are
heated and extruded. The bottle goes
through a lengthy process to become
that completed bottle of lubricants sitting on a store shelf. "Along this path,
at least 50 different machines touch this
bottle," Hamilton said. "All of these
machines require lubricants."
As a bottle of lubricants moves
through the production line and
supply chain, it will be touched by a
forklift, hand truck, extruder, trimmer,
conveyor belts, a box former, labeler,
filler, capper, coders, a cap sealer,
box sealer, palletizer, stretch wrapper,
truck, multiple delivery trucks and
more forklifts. "There are a lot of moving metal parts along this path, and
friction is relentless," Hamilton said.
