LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Connecting in California

he 2018 ILMA Annual Meeting is quickly approaching, and I am hoping to see
a record number of ILMA members in Palm Desert. As you know, our businesses
are built on relationships, and one of the best places to build and strengthen
relationships within our industry is at ILMA's Annual Meeting. This will be the 16th
consecutive Annual Meeting I've attended, and each year I'm excited for the opportunity
to connect with others.
When I took on the role as ILMA's president, I highlighted the fact that ILMA's real
start was based on a networking session and a small group of members that worked
together to collaborate and find new opportunities to do business. This year ILMA is
celebrating its 70th anniversary, and we need to keep that original spirit alive by tapping
into our roots while layering on the resources we have today.
The theme of this year's meeting is "Everything Old is New Again," which also applies
to networking. We have all kinds of technology at our fingertips to help us connect with
each other in a digital world, and being all-too-often buried in our phones keeps us from
a deeper conversation. Don't forget how powerful a simple face-to-face "hello" to the
person standing next to you or an invitation to grab a cup of coffee can be.
ILMA presents several opportunities for us to share a conversation. Receptions,
committee meetings and meal times are all conducive to meaningful exchanges, but don't
underestimate the many encounters that you can experience simply by working the lobby
of the meetings. Viewing each break, elevator trip and even downtime in the evenings as
potential networking opportunities allows us to maximize our time.
I encourage you to start thinking now about how to make networking a priority, which
will help you get even more value out of the Annual Meeting. Don't be shy about asking
for an introduction or offering one up to those you meet. The people in the business are
the reason you succeed.
During the event, make time for conversations and be open and accessible to those
around you. Part of networking is being genuinely interested in others, so ask questions
and learn more about their company, career, family or any other topic that will keep a
conversation flowing.
Before you get to the meeting, think about who you would like to meet and look for
them at the conference. Even better, you could reach out to them by email - or connect
through the ILMA app - ahead of the event and tell them you'd like to connect while
you're in California.
The ILMA Annual Meeting is the industry's premier networking venue, and everyone
there has the potential to be - or need - a resource going forward. Even more importantly, we need to work together as a group to advance the interests of our industry.
When we get to know more about each other and our businesses, we can each tell a more
compelling story about what we contribute to our communities and economy.
Fortunately, as we head into this year's event, there aren't as many pressing regulatory
issues as we've seen in the past, which gives us a perfect opportunity to use the extra time
we have to connect with each other. Let's use it to strengthen those relationships that will
help carry us into the future. I look forward to connecting with you in Palm Desert.
