DEMAND FOR LITHIUM CONTINUES TO RISE
Lithium demand continues to rise, in no small part because of its use in batteries
that power electric vehicles. China is the world's largest market for lithium and
accounts for nearly half of the global sales. It is a trend that will continue to
be driven by Chinese government-supported policies on the development and
adoption of electric vehicles. As demand for lithium carbonate, lithium hydroxide,
lithium chloride and lithium metal continues to outstrip supply, elevated prices
are expected to hold steady.
NEW ZEALAND'S LUBRICANT CONTAINER STEWARDSHIP PROGRAM
EXPLORES RECYCLING OPTIONS
According to the Lubricant Container Stewardship Program, over 7 million lubricant containers are discarded in New Zealand every year. The majority of those
containers end up in a landfill because the residue left inside the containers makes
it hazardous and difficult to recycle them, which lowers their value as a useful
recycled material. New Zealand's lubricant distributors and manufacturers are
working together to explore recycling options for lubricant containers, including a
voluntary, industry-led plan to recover, reuse and recycle waste lubricant containers
for urban and rural customers.
MANAGING MARINE SULFUR CAP EFFECTS THROUGH OIL-CONDITION
MONITORING
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) is driving an environmental
effort to reduce the sulfur content of marine fuels. Stakeholders in the industry
are debating and considering the merits of alternative fuels, such as liquefied
natural gas (LNG), and different engine equipment and configurations, as well
as advances in scrubber cleaning technology. Any changes that occur will have an
impact on vessel equipment, including lubricants. The Maritime Executive reports
that one method to manage the effects of the sulfur cap is through monitoring
of the in-service lubricant. Oil-condition monitoring (OCM), when used in
combination with fuel analytical information, helps to avoid costly engine failure
and downtime and plays a role in preventive maintenance programs.
VAN OORD SIGNS FIVE-YEAR PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT WITH
SHELL MARINE
Global maritime contractor Van Oord has signed a five-year partnership agreement with Shell Marine for the lubrication needs for its entire fleet of vessels.
The deal covers Shell Marine's delivery of lubricants for use on Van Oord vessels
worldwide while minimizing cost overheads and offering logistics and technical
support. With this agreement, Van Oord will have access to Shell Marine's Marine
Integrated Lubrication and Expert Solutions (MILES), which bundles the supply
of high-performance lubricants with an array of technical services, logistics and
delivery options tailored to Van Oord.
