Moving From Strategic Planning
to Implementation
Throughout my professional career I have always been a strong
proponent of being strategic. To me good leadership comes from
having a clear vision of where you want to go and having a plan
to get there. However, I have never been all that enamored with
the formal strategic planning process. In my experience, lots of
energy is put into going through a rote set of steps, and by the
time the plan is developed, everyone is ready to set it aside and
move on to the next thing rather than focusing on implementing the plan. The key to
being strategic is not the elegance of the plan, but the willingness to follow through on
implementing the plan, monitoring progress, and adjusting as needed.
The ITE Strategic Initiatives Committee, under the leadership of longtime ITE Fellow
Steve Gayle and with input from the ITE Board of Direction, has done an excellent job
of putting together the 2018-2020 ITE Strategic Plan and centering it on three Strategic
Opportunity Areas-Membership Diversity, Technical Leadership, and Institutional
Sustainability-and 8 goals that are both bold and achievable. Now the challenge is to
actually follow the plan and achieve the vision of a broader, more inclusive membership,
stronger technical programs, and a "One ITE" member experience.
I know that the ITE Board of Direction is committed to making this a living
document. And to ensure accountability and follow through, we will be creating a
tracking mechanism to provide visibility into the actions needed to implement the plan,
progress being made, and problem areas that need attention. Review of progress will be a
regular part of Board Meetings.
From a staff perspective we have aligned our efforts against this plan. Our annual
Strategic Implementation Plan guides staff efforts in each of our departments and
provides the basis for assessing progress and performance. We will be continually looking
for ways, big and small, to advance the strategic goals contained in the plan.
We want our members to be able to see our progress, as well. In our communications
to you through our various media, we will be linking actions taken to the Strategic Plan
and highlighting various initiatives and efforts specifically directed at achieving the
goals of the plan. Starting in this issue of ITE Journal you will see visual cues in articles
that contain information associated with fulfilling our Strategic Plan through the icons
that categorize our features. Look for the Strategic Plan icon in call-out boxes for more
information as we report our progress on delivering the plan this year.
I am excited about the new directions laid out in the Strategic Plan. I believe they will
result in a stronger ITE-one that is more relevant and recognized in our industry, one
that better connects our members, and one that provides more value for membership.
Now it is time to get to work. As always, I welcome your feedback at jpaniati@ite.org,
through ITE Community, and on Twitter at @JeffPaniatiITE.
