Plenary Sessions
Keynote Speaker, Opening Business
and Plenary Session
Tuesday, August 21, 8:30 - 10:30 a.m.
Our keynote speaker is Dr. Ken Smith, Corporate Scientist, 3M. Ken will share his perspectives on
the 3M Way and delve into the culture of innovation that 3M is globally recognized for pioneering.
Since 1987, Ken has worked in the development and commercialization of microreplicated Diamond
Grade retroreflective products. Although this broad product family has been a constant focus over the
years, the specific technologies and the resulting products have changed greatly, spanning the entire
reflective products pyramid. More recently Ken, as part of the 3M Connected Roads effort, has worked
to develop infrastructure materials which simultaneously serve both humans as well as connected
and automated vehicles. Ken joined 3M in September 1982 after receiving B.S., M.S., and Ph.D.
degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT. He is a named inventor on more than 100 patents.
