members will help to enhance the transportation system now and in the future
The transportation system that ITE members
work to create, enhance, update, and redesign is diverse. We care about diversity in
mode, accessibility, mobility, and availability
while focusing on everybody's safety, with
the understanding that transportation in
and of itself is an act of inclusivity. Inclusivity
includes removing barriers and extending
opportunities for all to participate, to connect people, goods, and services, to enhance
smart and livable communities, all while
making sure that transportation design and
policies do not result in discrimination.
In order for ITE to meet the demands of a
growing, connected, and rapidly changing
transportation system while staying true to
our mission, it makes sense, as a membership
organization, to focus on a strong policy of
Diversity & Inclusion.
Alyssa Rodriquez, upon the request of ITE
International President Michael P. Sanderson,
has formed a Diversity & Inclusion Committee
to assess opportunities for ITE's membership
to become more diverse. As an association,
we have many opportunities to create a dialogue with women, racial/ethnic minorities,
and disabled persons to identify issues and
possible solutions. We will consider Diversity
& Inclusion policies by which our Districts,
Sections, Chapters, Committees, and Councils operate. In addition, we can work to
encourage diversity through the choices of
speakers at meetings and conferences as well
as leadership and other volunteer activities.
We have opportunities to partner with the
Chartered Institute of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) in the United Kingdom to
understand their very successful diversity
and inclusion initiatives as well as other associations of minority and women-centered
STEM professional organizations. itej
