of the images. If the UAS must fly at a higher altitude due to
obstacles, the images collected may not be at a sufficient resolution
for detailed analysis on smaller or less visible features, such as skid
marks or impact damage.

Flight Plan Design concepts
In order to obtain accurate ortho-rectified images, it is desirable to
fly a grid pattern (example in Figure 4a) where multiple images are
stitched together to form a high-resolution composite image. Photos

at lower altitudes result in higher resolution images (Figure 4b),
but require more flight time. To effectively stitch multiple images
together, it is important that the images have approximately 70
percent overlap (Figure 4c and Figure 4e) and 70 percent sidelap
(Figure 4d and Figure 4f). Table 1 provides the flight plan values
(ground sampling distance (GSD), spacing between passes (ssidelap),
and speed (v), calculated for different altitudes for a DJI Phantom
4 (DJI, Shenzhen, China). The values in Table 1 can be changed for
different systems using the following three equations:
