Community Corner
Community Corner highlights the efforts of ITE
members to improve the daily lives of people in
their community beyond transportation. We
know that many of you spend countless hours
helping with charitable organizations that provide a variety of services such as literacy, hot
meals, clothing, and so much more.

"Traveling around Town" and
"Can I Stop in Time?" WDCSITE
STEM Event
The Washington, DC ITE Section (WDCSITE)
held a STEM event for middle school students in October 2019 at the Takoma Park

Community Center in Takoma Park, MD,
USA consisting of two hands-on learning
activities.
Traveling Around Town. Students worked
in pairs or groups of three through two problems to help residents of a fictional town get
from their origins to destinations using multimodal thinking.  Students had to consider
different transportation options, including
walking, biking, driving, or taking transit (bus).
Can I Stop in Time? Students also joined
in the parking lot of the Community Center
to test their perceptions of stopping-sight
distance. Students were divided into the
role of drivers (using measuring wheels) and
pedestrians. Pedestrians walked out into
the parking lot at the distance they thought
necessary for a vehicle to stop if traveling
at a given speed. The drivers were given
different speeds and told the stopping-sight
distance, then drove the measuring wheels
towards the pedestrians. As soon as they
passed pedestrians before reaching the

Can you guess the location of the "Where in the World?" photo in this issue? The answer is on

hear from you!
Have you, your Section, or Chapter
taken on a community project or
provided assistance to a non-profit

actual stopping-sight distance, collisions
were pointed out, highlighting that those
people would have been struck or had to
dodge out of the way to avoid a crash since
the vehicle could not stop in time.
Students discussed how the vehicle could
travel so far, and the ITE volunteers discussed
the concepts of thinking distance (perception)
and braking distance (reaction) that stem from
perception-reaction time. They also discussed
different factors impacting how quickly a
vehicle can stop, including driver factors
(age, sleepiness/drowsiness, medical conditions, impairment); roadway factors (weather,
grade); and vehicle factors (size, maintenance
condition, quality of parts). itej
Special thanks to Adam Greenstein,
