2020 Developing Trends Report
The ITE Coordinating Council
is pleased to share the 2020
Developing Trends report with the
ITE community. Publishing the
Developing Trends report is a success
story of all the Councils and an
example of how ITE Councils add
value to ITE membership.

Developing Trends is an attempt to address the question, "What will be relevant to practitioners
within the next two years?" The purpose of the report is to leverage ITE's collaborative spirit,
make the business case for Council involvement, and push the boundaries through diverse,
inclusive, and broad thought leadership.
The report was made possible through great volunteer work of all Councils and Committees who identified statements about what topics are important to ITE members. It shows
successful collaboration among ITE members with similar interests across different groups.
The report symbolizes the culture of value and growth. The report was compiled by a working
group chaired by Sogand Karbalaieali, Ph.D. (M); other members were Eric Rensel (M), ITE
Coordinating Council vice chair; Suresh Karre, P.E., PTOE (M); Mark Norman, P.E. (F); and
Sara Haufe Disney, P.E., PTOE (M). The report was presented to the ITE International Board
of Direction in November 2019.
Developing Trends will be published in February 2020 and made available the ITE website.
The report will include more than two dozen single-page reports on a variety of cross-cutting
topics. The categories include safety, operations, design, data, workforce, connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), ethics, and micromobility. Almost 80 percent of the reports cover safety
topics, and about half talk about data-driven approaches and data analytics.
Themes from the report include Vision Zero core principles implementation, using the
Safe Systems approach, traffic incident management for arterials, and communication and
activation of traffic control devices. The report also emphasizes the training and educational
development of the current and next generation of transportation professionals in public and
private sectors on advanced topics such as disruptive transportation, CAVs, equity, and more.
The report reveals a need for collaboration on cybersecurity, data-driven analysis, policy,
design, and practical implication of data in transportation systems that could lead to creation
of a Joint Subcommittee on data. The report also discusses the necessity of overcoming
injustice in the allocation of transportation resources and benefits from data-driven safety
analysis to address ethical questions. Micromobility challenges in the current infrastructure
and interaction of micromobility devices with other users are discussed and the development
of a guidebook on this topic is suggested. itej
