Intro to Transportation Engineering (Winner)
Carleton University Chapter/National Capital Section/Canadian District

St. Bonaventure Catholic School
Toronto Section/Canadian District
As an introduction to transportation engineering, students at St. Bonaventure Catholic School
were presented with a fictionalized scenario in which enrollment at their school had increased
dramatically, resulting in more traffic. Using a video, students completed a quick, five-minute
traffic count at nearby signalized intersections. The students then brainstormed solutions
to solve these issues, then tested with the results visually observed using SimTraffic. They
discussed possible solutions on the demand management side and the impacts of various
user groups at the school. For a hands-on activity, students were broken up into small groups
and asked to create a structure with craft materials. To give the activity a twist, their ability
to communicate with each other was compromised. Students discussed the importance of
communication, particularly under pressure, and understanding the priorities of everyone in
the group when completing a project.

APEG's STEMester Program
Northern Alberta Section/Canadian District
NACITE partnered with APEGA's STEMester program to invite 12 students in 10th grade to
downtown Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and introduce them to transportation engineering
and planning for a day. The day was divided into two topics: intersection design and complete
streets. Each topic included a short "lecture" to introduce the topic and concepts, a walking
trip outside to observe these concepts in the field, and a problem solving activity related to
what was observed in the field. In teams of three or four, students used Synchro to evaluate
intersection operations, suggest improvements, and enjoyed testing different geometry
configurations and intersection control options. The second activity included developing
Complete Streets cross-sections for a new LRT corridor in downtown Edmonton. The students visited the corridor and developed a cross-section within the limited right-of-way. Each
team presented their cross-section and identified the model priorities they chose and how it
affected their decisions.

Maryland STEM X Festival
Washington, DC Section/Mid-Colonial District
Volunteers from the ITE Washington, DC Section (WDCSITE) jointly organized activities
with The NEXT Education in October 2019 to demonstrate to students how connected and
automated vehicles (CAVs) work. This demonstration was one of several organized as part of
the MAKER Day at the Universities Space Research Association, Columbia, MD, USA, an official
event organized by the Maryland STEM X Festival. Students tested CAV sensors on miniature
model autonomous vehicles for object detection and reaction (stopping), tried their skills at
Python programming code to change their settings, and laid out strips of color material on the
floor to test vehicle object tracking for movement (such as real-life CAVs following pavement
markings for lane keeping).
