ITE Joins Organizations in Call for Preservation
of 5.9 GHz Safety Spectrum

FHWA's HSIS
Competition Now Open!

In response to a recent proposal by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to
reallocate a majority of the 5.9 GHz safety
spectrum for unlicensed use, ITE has joined
other organizations in requesting that the
FCC continue to preserve the spectrum for
safety technologies.

potential to save tens of thousands of lives
each year-but only if these technologies
are given the certainty of a safety spectrum
that is free from signal interference. States
and cities across the country have begun
to deploy these technologies. Reallocation of the majority of the dedicated safety
spectrum will likely slow or even halt these
deployment activities."

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)
is pleased to announce the Excellence in
Highway Safety Data Award, part of the
Highway Data Analysis Excellence Awards
Program, designed to encourage university
students to use Highway Safety Information
System (HSIS) data to investigate a topic that
advances highway safety and to develop a
paper to document the original research.

ITE also joined ITS America and other organizations in a statement on December 4, 2019
calling on the FCC to refrain from finalizing
any action related to sharing the spectrum
with unlicensed devices. In addition, ITE sent
a letter in early December to U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao
thanking her for her continued leadership on
the issue.

The Excellence in Highway Safety Data
Award's goal is to encourage university students to use HSIS data with the intent of
introducing potential future highway safety
professionals to good quality safety data, the

In a statement released November 21, 2019,
ITE iterated its concern that the non-safety
related uses of the spectrum could harm the
public welfare. "The proposal to reallocate
the majority of the 5.9 GHz safety spectrum
for unlicensed uses comes at a time when
more than 36,000 people are dying on our
nation's highways each year," the statement
read. "Connected vehicle technologies have
been identified by the National Highway
Traffic Safety Administration as having the

"As a mentee, I am
able to grow my
network and gain
insight and guidance
from someone
outside of my
organization. From
my experience in this program and through my
relationship with my mentor, I will take away
a new perspective on what my professional
future may look like. I am also looking forward
to having another connection and familiar face
at future ITE meetings."

"We've all had help
along the way to get
to where we are at
and I've had a lot
of help from some
pretty tremendous
mentors. It is my
honor to repay that debt by mentoring the next
generation of transportation professionals.
Working together we can achieve great things
for our profession and our communities."
