ITE Journal - January 2020 - 41

In mid-October 2019, we traveled from North America to visit
the Australia-New Zealand Section of ITE (ITE-ANZ). The trip
provided a great opportunity to interact with Section Leadership
in Melbourne and Auckland, in both formal and informal settings.
We were able to learn more about the history of the Section, as
well as recent initiatives to grow membership and to become better
connected to North America. A valuable initiative has been a
travel scholarship to the ITE Annual Meeting and Exhibit allowing
a young ITE-ANZ member to attend this meeting, engage with
the ITE Board of Direction, and take back lessons learned to the
ITE-ANZ Section. The ITE-ANZ Section is hoping to expand this
program with young members in the coming years.
We also learned that member interest in the ITE-ANZ Section
is driven by a desire to be connected to what is happening around
the world, particularly in North America. We got a strong sense of
leadership in the Section, which had a great mix of folks at different
points in their career-whether it be young members, mid-career
professionals, or those with decades of experience. There is also a
strong sense of support for the student chapters and a willingness
on the part of the professional members to share their time and
knowledge with the students.
Monash Student Chapter. One of our first days in Australia, we
had the opportunity to visit with the student chapter of ITE-ANZ
at Monash University, located in Melbourne. The energy and
excitement among these students was clear-the group is very
active, with a large and diverse membership.
Dr. Geoff Rose (F) is the faculty advisor at Monash University,
helping to support the student members. The chapter has put on a
number of different events, including guest speakers from the Section
and local leaders in transportation, and social networking nights.
They even held an ITE Student Leadership Summit in September
2018 in Melbourne, which the ITE Legacy Fund helped support.
Bruce shared some information with the group on ITE student
activities taking place in North America. They were very excited to
learn more about ITE and to find ways to be better connected to the

rest of the organization. The students at Monash were particularly
interested in growing their leadership skills and expressed a strong
interest in leadership training and development opportunities for
students, similar to the LeadershipITE program.
After his presentation, Bruce was quickly surrounded by young
members who wanted to know more about the opportunities to
engage with ITE in North America.
Transportation Seminar. After meeting with the student
chapter, we attended an evening seminar at the Royal Melbourne
Institute of Technology in Melbourne, put on by the ITE Young
Professionals of ITE-ANZ. The young professionals organized the
speakers, emceed, and managed the entire event. About 100 people
were at the seminar, which focused primarily on transportation
modeling, with two local experts sharing their experiences and
advice on the subject. Bruce then shared an overview of ITE and
highlighted leading transportation issues and trends in North
America, particularly centered around ITE's major initiatives.
Local Transportation. In both Melbourne, Australia and
Auckland, New Zealand, we had the chance to meet with local
transportation leaders to learn more about the trends, challenges,
and opportunities professionals are dealing with on the ground.
We gained a better appreciation for both country's approaches to
transportation and transportation planning, and were able to see
some of the projects that were underway. We talked about some of
the similarities and differences among our countries, such as micromobility, including e-scooter and bike sharing programs. Interestingly, Melbourne has not yet deployed an e-scooter program, and
while scooters are available in Auckland, the bike sharing initiative
in Melbourne is being dismantled due to lack of success.
When it came to Vision Zero, both countries demonstrated a
strong commitment to the safety initiatives designed to end traffic
fatalities and serious injuries. Among the public, the commitment
to Vision Zero-or Towards Zero, as the campaign is called there-
