is strong, and an aggressive enforcement of speed limits has created
widespread compliance.
These conversations raised questions about the differences in
North America and abroad when it comes to Vision Zero. We were
very impressed by their approach to the Towards Zero campaign and
some of the successes that they have had. This provided us yet another
learning opportunity for those of us in North America to find out
what lessons from Australia and New Zealand can be applied at home.
IEEE Symposium. At the conclusion of the trip, Jeff Paniati and
Jeff Lindley participated in an all-day symposium put on by IEEE
focused on connected and automated vehicles (CAVs). Discussions
focused on the potential readiness for deploying CAVs, as well as some
of the opportunities and challenges on the infrastructure side when
it comes to these vehicles. The symposium included speakers from
IEEE that tended to bring a more theoretical and academic view to
the problem, as well as presenters representing ITE who brought more
of a practice perspective. Collaborations like this with IEEE allow
for the exchange of ideas between the electrical engineering/systems
engineering view of transportation, and ITE, which comes from the
civil engineering/transportation planning side of the industry.

YITE and Student Involvement
ITE-ANZ has experienced a growth in students and young
members in the last few years. An important ingredient in the
growth of the ITE-ANZ Section is the Young ITE-ANZ (YITE)
program. Younger members are encouraged to build their own
network within ITE-ANZ and to take on leadership responsibilities
for ITE-ANZ meetings and activities.
Since mid-2017, ITE has supported a student chapter at Monash
University, which holds regular events and administers a student
mentoring program. This year, more than 75 students have
participated in the Mentoring Program. The University of Sydney
also held its first student seminar in many years, and has begun
the process of establishing itself as a sustainable club on campus.
An ITE Student Leadership Summit (SLS) was held in September
2018 in Melbourne. The goals of the SLS were to:
* Foster future transport industry leaders;
* Provide an interactive forum for students; and
* Promote interdisciplinary connections across Australia and
New Zealand.
The SLS and ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl have been a catalyst for
raising awareness across Australia and New Zealand around ITE.
Participants are being sponsored to travel to Melbourne for the
SLS, which has helped ITE's presence extend to include young
members in the Australian cities of Sydney, Adelaide, and Perth, as
well as in New Zealand.

Opportunities for Collaboration
This trip served to create new relationships between ITE leadership
in North America, Australia and New Zealand and to strengthen
ties between ITE International and ITE-ANZ. We identified a
number of immediate opportunities for ITE Headquarters to
better engage and support members in Australia and New Zealand
and areas to explore further. It also strengthened the relationship
between ITE and IEEE and identified opportunities for continued
collaboration in the area of connected and automated vehicles.
Actions to be pursued include the following:
ƒ Quarterly Showcase on ITE-ANZ. ITE will present a quarterly
column in ITE Journal in 2020 highlighting some of the activities
taking place at the ITE-ANZ Section and better connect
members and activities in North America with Australia and
New Zealand. This column will be a hub for updates from the
Section and a chance to profile some of our members there, as
well as highlight leading transportation practices.
ƒ Young Members. One very clear takeaway from the trip was the
student and young member interest in connecting with other
ITE members around the world. ITE Membership Director
Colleen Agan will be working with the ITE Younger Member
Committee to identify and connect ITE Younger Member
groups across our Sections.
ƒ Professional Development. Explore innovative approaches for
providing ITE-ANZ members with access to ITE professional
development offerings, helping to bridge the significant time
difference.
ƒ IEEE. Participants left the IEEE Symposium with a shared
understanding of the technical and institutional challenges
associated with the deployment of connected and automated
vehicles and ways that IEEE and ITE can work together to
advance solutions to these challenges. ITE intends to continue
