How Your Credit Union
Can Wow Members
Using Open Banking

O

pen banking - technology
that allows cross-platform
transactions among retailers, financial institutions
and consumers - is a great strategic
investment for your credit union. More
than half of U.S. financial institutions
are investing in the seamless connectivity of open banking, as are 75
percent of European financial institutions. These are the institutions that
continue to innovate and wow their
customers and members because they
can more easily adapt and leverage
third-party opportunities. 

Open banking allows you to deliver
digital products faster and more
cheaply. Older legacy systems aren't
easy to use. They were designed years
ago and not built for the technology
revolution that is occurring in banking today. Enabling these systems for
current demands can be costly and
frustrating, even in just finding the
expertise for the old code. By moving
to an open-banking solution, your
credit union can develop modules
that allow you to share data to support
your products and shorten development time and cost.
Open-banking vendors aren't looking to replace your core tech - they
improve it. Open-banking solutions
are modular, allowing your credit
union the flexibility to operate at your
pace. Take the pieces you need, and

then design, deliver and execute on
your specific offerings to your members. The right open-banking platform
will work with your existing core to
enable your digital transformation.
Many credit unions partner with
other businesses for particular
services, and open banking makes
this easier. Potential partners, such
as fintechs, can write code to your
application programming interfaces
(APIs) and vice versa. This connectivity allows your institution to share
data automatically and securely and
in a manner that's easy to create and
manage by all parties. By easily
sharing the data, you open your
credit union up to new products
and services.
New products and services mean new
revenue streams, too. By enabling open
banking, you're no longer bound to
geography. You can better compete
with fintechs or partner with them to
create a digital portfolio to benefit your
members. Your credit union could
offer loans and collect documentation
without members having to enter a
branch. They can take photos of their
ID with their phone, share pay stubs
electronically and provide additional
information - all without your direct
involvement. This info is then loaded
into your system with fewer errors, freeing up your staff 's time and allowing
you to take quicker action.

Plus, open banking is just some
really cool tech. Your IT department
will thank you. If you don't have
the expertise currently, you can
always partner with or hire the
talent to execute the upgrades. And
remember, technology or product
adoptions can be accomplished in
stages, but it's better to find the right
talent before someone else beats you to
the punch. 
The open-banking movement is in
full swing. It's stronger in Europe right
now than in the United States, but
where will you be when it fully arrives?
Don't be left behind, wondering where
your members went.
