FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK

The 'Secret' Behind Credit Union Growth
By B. Dan Berger, NAFCU President and CEO

T

he secret is out - credit unions
are a great way for all Americans to manage their finances.

Look no further than the
116 million Americans who have joined
a credit union - a 4.3 percent annual
increase according to the 2018 NAFCU
Report on Credit Unions - as a testament
to the quality service credit unions
provide their members.

As member-owned financial institutions, credit unions have a mission that
puts people first, not shareholders or
corporate profits. Our one-member,
one-vote principle ensures that credit
unions provide the best financial care
for their members looking to finance a
family home, a car to get to work or a
small business startup. For credit unions,
every loan made and every dollar earned
serves their membership and is reinvested into their local community.

Given these principles, it is no wonder
our industry has seen historic growth
in membership.
As the credit union industry's Washington watchdog, NAFCU is here to
advocate for you and, most importantly,
to help you grow.
Why? It's simple. Because to us, it's personal.
Our mission is to strengthen credit unions.
In support of that mission, we strive to be
member-driven, passionate and focused
intently on extreme member service.
More than 400 credit unions have
joined NAFCU in the past three years,
and I am elated that so many in the
industry have chosen to grow stronger
with us. This outpouring of support
invigorates us, drives us and reaffirms
our belief that putting the interests and
needs of our membership first is the
best way forward for our association
and the credit union industry.
For me, credit unions' unique, membercentric mission is personal. When I
was growing up, my first-ever savings
account was with my local credit union.
The institution helped me, it helped
my family, and I saw firsthand all the
good it did in my local community.

''

This experience has forever shaped my
belief in the industry, and it is this belief
that drives NAFCU as we engage with
policymakers and elected officials in
Washington, D.C.
Through our advocacy, we work to
ensure the existence of a legislative and
regulatory environment that allows
credit unions the opportunity to grow
stronger, thrive and successfully serve
their membership. To this end, credit
unions' federal charter must be modernized to keep pace with changes in
state laws, technology and the financial
services industry. More so, credit unions
must not be subject to unnecessary and
burdensome regulations that harm their
ability to help members meet their
financial needs.
From inside the Washington beltway,
NAFCU will continue to fight for the
credit union industry, its members and
all other American consumers who wish
to join our growing industry.
We can't keep this secret anymore -
nor do we want to. Will you come
grow stronger with us?
