MANAGEMENT INSIGHT

Sometimes It's Just
Not Complicated
By Vinny Boles

M

any elements can contribute to making us more
productive employees and
better leaders, and not all
of those disciplines and pursuits require
years of training or major life changes. A
student in one of my classes mentioned
four simple but effective secrets for doing
his job more effectively, which a former
boss had once told him and he never
forgot. They're worth repeating:

Be on Time. You get only 24 hours
in a day, and I have observed that the
effective use of time makes the difference
between high performers and laggards.
High performers get more done in the
same amount of time as laggards because
they focus - and the first thing they
focus on is not abusing their teammates'
time by being late. Recently, I worked
with a group conducting individual
interviews. The routine "lateness factor"
was 10 to 40 minutes. This standard
operating procedure negatively impacted
my impression of the group's professionalism. "I guess if I ever need something on a Friday, I'd better ask for it by
Wednesday," I thought. There is a reason
why the youngest and most exceptional
coach in NFL history, John Madden, said
that, while he had very few rules, one of
them was "be on time."
Always Have Something to Write With.
Unless you are blessed with a photographic memory (and no one will believe
you are), show respect by coming prepared to get the insights the people at the
meeting - especially your boss! - are
willing to share. Then make time to read
your notebook before the next meeting
and take action on the tasks you need

to address. Employees who don't do this
appear uninterested and rude. They are
usually judged ineffective at best and are
relegated to the company's B team.

Often we spend our energy looking for
the magic bullet, the secret sauce to
success and relationships. Sometimes it's
just not that complicated.

Remember People's Names. "If you
remember my name, you pay me a subtle compliment; you indicate that I have
made an impression on you," said Dale
Carnegie, author of the classic How
to Win Friends and Influence People.
People enjoy hearing their own name
rather than the alternative, "Hey, you!"
Using someone's name shows you pay
attention, you remember, and you are
thoughtful enough to know the impact
it has. Take some of your valuable
social media time and Google "how to
remember names." This practice makes
a difference.

Dress Appropriately. This is harder to
do today, with the prevalence of "business casual" and "casual Friday" policies. I have found the following to be a
good rule of thumb: "If I were asking
the people I'm meeting to invest in me,
what would I wear?" Like being on time,
having something to write with, and
remembering names, dressing appropriately conveys respect, and usually that
respect will be returned to you many
times over.
