Union, Charleston, W.Va.

Your Direct Connection to Federal Advocacy, Education & Compliance

Over his 40 years at Franklin Mint Federal Credit Union as
president and CEO, Unangst has transformed his credit union,
growing it from one branch, two employees and $1 million in
assets to 40 branches, 325 full-time employees and more than
$1 billion in assets. His big dreams for Franklin Mint helped the
institution expand membership to 84,557 and reach an all-time
lending record of $146.5 million in consumer loans in 2016.
In that time, Unangst has never missed a board meeting. He
spearheaded the creation of a financial literacy center at a
local high school and established himself as an innovator and
visionary who does not wait for others to act first. His staff
describes him as "someone who relishes doing the opposite of
everyone else." When other institutions were too nervous to
offer mortgages when rates were at all-time highs in the 1980s,
Unangst moved forward because he saw a need in Franklin
Mint's membership. In 2016, Franklin Mint serviced $113.8
million in mortgages, all while maintaining low delinquency
and charge-off rates.
Amid his professional accomplishments, Unangst's devotion to
financial literacy education is the strongest thread. His financial
literacy programs - including the local high school center -
have reached more than 11,500 adults and children over the
years. Employees say he embodies the spirit of Ben Franklin's
words: "An investment in knowledge pays the best interest."

THE NAFCU JOURNAL  JULY-AUGUST 2017

McGowan's legacy in his two-plus years as president and CEO of
Pioneer West Virginia Federal Credit Union has been characterized by getting great results from unexpected places. Pioneer
finished 2015 and 2016 with record earnings despite serving an
economically depressed area. McGowan has led Pioneer through
the introduction of several new products in the past year, including remote deposit capture, same-day ACH and the instant
issuing of credit and debit cards. In the meantime, Pioneer also
reduced its operating expenses by more than $1.2 million.
McGowan has done all this while making employee morale
a priority, with the mantra that leadership and management
"need not be mutually exclusive."
McGowan's staff say morale was low when he joined Pioneer
in 2010 as senior vice president and CFO, as part of a boardinstigated makeover for the credit union. The credit union
had experienced two years of six-figure losses and had a
history of unpopular management strategies.
After being promoted, McGowan focused on employee quality of life, compensation and benefits. McGowan's performance bonus program and comprehensive group health plan
have made a strong impression, and McGowan even took
advantage of the Pioneer holiday party to give away $15,000
in Christmas presents to employees - including crowd-pleasing items such as hoverboards, drones and vacation getaways.
McGowan also started a program to match donations to charities chosen by employees. These efforts resulted in higher
morale and a record low turnover rate for Pioneer during the
last two years - proving how quickly effective leadership can
make a difference.
