FROM THE CHAIR

A Helping (Compliance) Hand
By Richard L. Harris, NAFCU Chair

N

AFCU's promise to its member credit unions is clear:
to provide the very best in federal advocacy, education and
compliance assistance. And I can assure
you that the association's compliance
assistance program, enhanced by the
high caliber of its compliance staff, is the
best in the industry.
NAFCU's compliance team is constantly
looking for new ways to simplify complex topics and regulations in order to
save credit unions time and reduce frustration. If you are not taking advantage
of this assistance, I strongly encourage
you to do so.
NAFCU has compiled guides, articles,
charts and more to help compliance officers get a handle on myriad compliance
issues, including the Home Mortgage
Disclosure Act (HMDA), the Military
Lending Act (MLA), and the Truth in
Lending Act/Real Estate Settlement
Procedures Act integrated mortgage
disclosure rule (TRID).

To top it off, NAFCU's compliance team
provides answers to members' questions
within one business day or less.
The association's compliance offerings
extend beyond one-on-one assistance.
NAFCU also produces electronic handbooks and manuals, such as the Credit
Union Compliance 101 Manual and the
Credit Union Compliance GPS. NAFCU
also hosts various conferences and
seminars and offers an online training
subscription, all to help credit unions
understand their responsibilities regarding challenging compliance topics.

In addition to getting top-notch compliance assistance from NAFCU, credit
union professionals can also earn
prestigious designations, including
NAFCU Certified Compliance Officer
(NCCO), NAFCU Certified Risk Manager (NCRM), NAFCU Certified Bank
Secrecy Officer (NCBSO) and NAFCU
Certified Volunteer Expert (NCVE),
which signify excellence in their fields.
The accreditations offered by NAFCU for
compliance and risk management are
pure value - and I tell you this based on
firsthand experience.
I am an NCCO myself. I was one of the
very first to be certified in 1997. I have
continued to take all necessary education credits to keep my certification
in good standing. As a CEO, I have
found the knowledge and information
obtained through the certification
process to be so valuable and helpful in
all areas related to compliance and risk.
I proudly hang my NCCO certificate in
my office to this day.

Bureau's (CFPB) HMDA rules and the
mortgage servicing rule amendments.
I hope NAFCU members are taking
advantage of the association's various
compliance offerings. I encourage nonmembers to look into it. The value your
credit union will receive for compliance
assistance will be well worth it.
NAFCU offers all federally-insured
credit unions a helping hand as we move
together through the current tidal wave
of overregulation. It's a helping hand
worth holding onto.

of Caltech Employees Federal Credit
Union. Find more information on

Since I know the value that comes from the
NCCO and NCRM programs, I also supported my own credit union's risk management officer, May Sarmac, as she worked
toward achieving both designations. She
often draws on the knowledge she has
gained through NAFCU certifications.
I cannot speak highly enough of NAFCU's
efforts and achievements in the compliance arena. While the association is busy
every day advocating for an easing in credit
unions' regulatory burden, we still must be
prepared for rules coming down the pike,
such as the Consumer Financial Protection
