FROM THE CHAIR

NAFCU Is Working for You Every Day
By Richard L. Harris, NAFCU Chair

T

he main job of a trade association is advocacy. One track
of advocacy is done by you -
credit union leaders who are on
the front lines every day, sharing with
policymakers exactly what they need for
a healthy regulatory environment.

Another track is done by the trade
association itself: relationship building
and maintaining. And this track -
like all the others - is one in which
NAFCU excels.
This is an association that last year alone
offered nine congressional testimonies
and held more than 30 high-profile
meetings with congressional leaders,
regulatory decision-makers and key
members of the administration.
This momentum will be carried into 2018
as the association builds upon its efforts
and successes. Because of NAFCU's
continued efforts, these policymakers
know the association by name, know the
credit union industry and know our top
concerns. In the world of advocacy, that
is as good as it gets.
Last year, NAFCU was in the White
House, Treasury Department, Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) and Small Business
Administration (SBA), to name only
a few offices. NAFCU understands
that getting a foot in the door to these
places is a big win, but keeping that
door open is where the real work is
done. NAFCU's ability to maintain
relationships with top lawmakers, regulators and administration officials is
unmatched in our industry.

Last August, I was honored to be a part
of a meeting with Treasury Secretary
Steven Mnuchin, along with several CEO
colleagues and members of the NAFCU
staff. We discussed regulatory relief and
Treasury's report addressing possible
relief for credit unions and banks. In fact,
the Treasury report, released last June,
cites NAFCU's Annual Report on Credit
Unions multiple times.
In September, NAFCU-member credit
union leaders, with association staff,
attended a meeting at HUD with
Secretary Ben Carson. The group
discussed credit unions' role in helping
low-income consumers and how the
industry and HUD can work together
to advance their goals.

Capitol Hill to tout the good work of the
credit union industry and explain what
is needed to create a healthy regulatory
environment in which our institutions
can thrive and continue to serve our
members well.
It is not by accident that NAFCU is No. 1
in advocacy. Its board and staff are daily
representing your needs before all those
who have a voice in the financial arena.
You are the association's priority, and
NAFCU's efforts do not go unnoticed by
policymakers in Washington.
Richard L. Harris is president and CEO of
Caltech Employees Federal Credit Union.

Also in September, NAFCU President
and CEO Dan Berger and SBA Administrator Linda McMahon, on the stage at
NAFCU's annual Congressional Caucus,
signed a new Memorandum of Understanding aimed at improving access to
credit union small-dollar loans to small
businesses across the nation.
The association has also met with
Counselor to the Treasury Secretary
Craig Phillips, who came to NAFCU's
headquarters last summer to discuss
regulatory relief measures for credit
unions with Berger. Mark Calabria,
chief economist for Vice President
Mike Pence, has also met with NAFCU.
Because of these ongoing relationships,
both Phillips and Calabria also spoke at
NAFCU's Congressional Caucus.
NAFCU also regularly attends meetings
at the SBA, NCUA and CFPB and on
