FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK

NAFCU Raises the Bar for 2018
By B. Dan Berger, NAFCU President and CEO

T

he start of the new year is a good
time to reflect on the positives
from the previous year, take
lessons learned and recommit to
what matters most. At NAFCU, that's an
easy call - what matters most are our
members. Your needs and priorities are
what drive NAFCU, and we will always
represent your best interests when
engaging with lawmakers and regulators
in Washington. We will continue to do
this in 2018 - fight the tough fights on
behalf of our members and seek opportunities that will empower credit unions
to better serve their members.
2017 was a strong year for NAFCU and
the credit union industry. Reflecting
the good work that credit unions do in
their communities and the strength of
NAFCU's advocacy efforts, the industry
achieved important legislative and regulatory wins. The NCUA was kept out of
the congressional appropriations process,

and the CFPB exempted credit union
products from its payday lending rule.
Unfortunately, data security breaches
remain a concern. But NAFCU's partnership with the world's largest blockchain
consortium gives our members a unique
opportunity to help drive technological
progress and ensure future technology
will keep personal information protected.
Heading into 2018, NAFCU will
continue to urge Congress to address
third-party data breaches so companies
that fail to secure consumer data are held
accountable. We will urge lawmakers
and regulators to roll back unnecessary
rules to ensure credit unions can meet
consumers' financial needs with safe,
reliable products. We will encourage the
NCUA to undertake cost-saving measures and streamline processes to reduce
credit unions' regulatory burden. And
we will stay vigilant in defending credit
unions' tax-exempt status.
We're excited to be the first U.S.
financial trade association to join
Hyperledger, a global collaboration
developing cross-industry blockchain
technologies. Through this partnership
and a new one with Enterprise Ethereum Alliance, our members can build
relationships with some of the top companies in the world and ensure credit

unions' perspectives are represented in
groundbreaking data processing that
will help drive innovation in how we do
business. NAFCU will look for additional opportunities to showcase the
work of credit unions and provide our
members with valuable connections.
NAFCU exists for you, our members.
All year long, we strive to provide the
very best in federal advocacy, education
and compliance assistance. In 2017, we
pushed for your interests at the highest
levels of government. Our topical webcasts and webinars provided insight on
issues such as membership and lending
growth strategies. Our regulatory compliance team fielded an average of 770
questions per month. And millions of
Americans realized the incredible value
credit unions create every day because of
our communications outreach.
This is my pledge to you: NAFCU will
do even more in 2018 to equip you with
what you need to provide the best services and products to your members now
and well into the future. Thank you for
believing in our mission and supporting
us through it all.
