Optimistic Outlook

ased on NAFCU's Credit Union
Sentiment Index (CUSI), the
outlook for growth among
respondents is moderately
strong through 2018.
For the most part, this is a carryover
from the previous CUSI survey. Looking
back, economic returns were positive
through the end of 2017, reflecting, in
part, the recovery efforts following a
series of damaging storms from earlier
in the year. But broad-based consumer
activity also contributed to the overall
optimism, suggesting newfound economic momentum.
That general sense of optimism for the
industry remains.
Respondents with a positive growth
outlook through 2018 cited the

economy and loan demand as the main
drivers. There also is ongoing optimism
regarding the easing of regulatory
burdens. Driven by an expectation for
loan demand, respondents also are

optimistic regarding the earnings outlook. Notably, respondents' assessment
of applicant quality rebounded after
suffering a steep drop in the previous
CUSI survey.
