FROM THE CHAIR

NAFCU: A Successful Past
and a Bright Future
By Richard L. Harris, NAFCU Chair

S

erving you these past two
years as NAFCU's board chair
has been a privilege and an
honor - a true highlight of
my 40-year credit union career. As I
reflect upon my time in this post, I must
say it is an exciting time to be involved
with NAFCU.

This association is the industry's top
Washington watchdog, and it strives each
day to make sure credit unions have a
healthy and appropriate regulatory and
legislative environment in which they
can thrive.
My time as chair of the board
allowed me to preside over statechartered credit unions gaining
equal membership rights and
board participation in NAFCU. To
see the overwhelming support of
this membership change was truly
affirming. Of course, with this move
came the change of NAFCU's name to
the National Association of FederallyInsured Credit Unions - another
highlight of my time as chairman.
These changes positioned NAFCU to
better its laser focus on federal advocacy,
education and compliance assistance.
Other highlights from my time serving
as your chair include:
■■

4

The honor of meeting with President
Donald Trump in February to discuss
top concerns of the industry. Trump
showed great interest in the industry
(see page 10).

Being part of the NAFCU delegation
that met with Treasury Secretary
Steven Mnuchin last summer. I, along
with several of my CEO colleagues and
NAFCU staff members, advocated on
behalf of credit unions for regulatory
relief during this meeting.
■■ Representing NAFCU throughout the
various presidential inaugural celebrations in January 2017. Experiencing
the peaceful transfer of power in this
great nation was truly exhilarating.
However, sharing the credit union perspective and story as I attended these
events with lawmakers on both sides
of the aisle was the highlight.
■■ Celebrating NAFCU's 50th anniversary in Honolulu. To share the success
story of NAFCU throughout 2017 was
an amazing opportunity.
■■ Witnessing the credit union tax
exemption go untouched in a tax
reform package passed by Congress
last year. Because of the hard work and
advocacy efforts by credit unions and
NAFCU, the credit union tax exemption remains intact.
■■ Maintaining the independence of the
NCUA. The credit union industry kept
the NCUA out of the congressional
appropriations process last year.
■■

today without credit unions sharing their
stories with lawmakers and regulators at
every turn. I encourage you all to keep
up the fight - especially as we enter
another election cycle later this year.
As I prepare to pass my chairmanship to
an esteemed colleague, I want to assure
you that NAFCU's future is as bright as
ever. Your membership and trust in this
association are valued more than you
know, and I sincerely thank you for giving me the opportunity to serve you.
Richard L. Harris is president and CEO of
Caltech Employees Federal Credit Union.

While there are many other highlights
to mention - including the nine
congressional testimonies by NAFCU
members and a 315 percent spike in
grassroots action last year alone - I
think it's important to note that the
common thread throughout all these
achievements is your involvement.
NAFCU would not be as strong as it is
