FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK

Fighting for Credit Unions,
Fighting to Win
By B. Dan Berger, NAFCU president and CEO

A

s we kick off 2020, NAFCU
has an important message for
credit unions: We will always
fight on your behalf, stand
beside you, and provide your institution
with the resources and support it needs
to reach its next phase of growth.

Despite a competitive marketplace and
bankers' continued attacks against our
community-based institutions, credit
unions remained focused on serving
their members and local communities. It
is because of this noble pursuit that I, as
well as the entire NAFCU team, remain
committed to you, your credit union and
your members.
Because to us, it's personal.
Our industry is about people - not the
almighty dollar, not shareholder profits.

40

We strive to provide exceptional member
service - not to take advantage of consumers. While credit unions continue to
serve their local communities and act as
the white hats of the financial services
industry, NAFCU will advocate on their
behalf before Congress, the NCUA and
other financial regulators.
In 2019, our advocacy efforts delivered
key wins for the industry, including:
delaying the NCUA's risk-based capital
rule until Jan. 1, 2022, and the Current
Expected Credit Losses standard until
2023 to give credit unions additional
time to prepare;
■ securing a Federal Housing Finance
Agency internal directive ensuring that
big banks do not receive more favorable loan pricing than credit unions
from the government-sponsored
enterprises based upon high loan
volume rather than loan quality;
■ fighting back against banker lawsuits
challenging the NCUA's field-ofmembership rule in an attempt to
prevent credit union growth;
■ removing a provision from the
National Defense Authorization Act
that would treat for-profit banks the
same as not-for-profit credit unions on
military bases; and
■ supporting House passage of the
Corporate Transparency Act of 2019
and COUNTER Act of 2019, which
would make important improvements
to the Bank Secrecy Act/anti-money
laundering regime and beneficial
ownership requirements.
■

As your Washington watchdog,
NAFCU's award-winning government
affairs team will continue to push for
more and build off the wins that we
have secured for the credit union industry. To this end, NAFCU will focus
on advancing a legislative and regulatory agenda that allows credit unions
to grow, reduces regulatory burdens,
facilitates a level playing field, promotes
government transparency and accountability, and supports a strong, independent NCUA as the primary regulator for
credit unions.
NAFCU's accomplishments are possible only because of your support, and
we are humbled by it. Nevertheless, it
also empowers us to deliver the boldest
advocacy agenda, the most responsive
compliance assistance and the most
forward-looking educational programs
the industry has to offer. And, we will
never take your support for granted.
We will continue to do what we do best:
fight for you and deliver wins for the
credit union industry. Thank you for
allowing us to serve you.
